Mike Biddle Video on Sustainably Recycling Plastics–from TED Global 2011

The statistics on waster are amazing … “Less than 10% of plastic trash is recycled … because of the massively complicated problem of finding and sorting the different kinds. …”

Mike Biddle has developed a solution to change that “ … developed a patented 30-step plastics recycling system … that takes less than a tenth of the energy required to make virgin plastic from crude oil. …”  The process is sustainable, uses waste streams as a raw material, helps eliminate waste and reduces CO2 emissions … instead of oil.

See the fascinating TED video for details …on an efficient plant that can, and does, recycle any kind of plastic.

Novel Idea - Wind Tubines on Highway Signs

 Arizona State University logo

An Arizona State University student has Wind Turbine on Highway Sign Posta novel design to mount HORIZONTAL wind turbines on overhead highway signposts.  By modifying the existing signposts they can be become wind energy sources. See mocked up picture at RIGHT >>>

" ... estimates ... on the highways outside of Phoenix, ... each turbine would produce enough energy annually to power a 700-square-foot apartment. ..."

The idea is that the breeze from the moving cars and the wind can generate "free energy" for the grid - and not require any additional energy use by cars and trucks.  In Arizona many of the highways have a 70 mph speed limit.

National Renewable Energy Laboratory

National Renewable Energy Laboratory logo

After building a very efficient building in Boulder, Colorado, the NERL is building an extension that is 17 % more efficient.  How ?  By looking at changes in available technology in the last year that can bring energy improvements.

One area for change was the windows.  Those in Phase 1 are very efficient but still those on the southern exposure were cold ... changes made for Phase 2 included making them slightly smaller and increasing the thermal break to slow air infiltration that can cause temperature changes.  When these savings are multiplied over 600 windows the energy efficiency is significant.

Photo rendering of the fully built Research Support Facility.Improvements were made in the Phase 2 thermal storage system ... they found they could simplify the design ... instead of " ... interlaced structural concrete grade beams for thermal transfer .... " ... there just now just a " ....a large open concrete crawl space."

Lastly each occupant is put on an energy diet of 55 watts / workstation.  This goes a long way to keeping electricxity bills under control.

Stanford Students Design Recyclable Laptop Prototype

e-waste is a growing problem.  When tossed into a landfill they can cause water and soil pollution.  Several Stanford University students have tackled the problem by developing a prototype laptop that is modular so it is easily “de-manufactured”.  The process is fast and can facilitate recycling the constituent components.

Theoretically manufacturers could use this in “green advertising” to differentiate their product from others.

IBM Green Data Center is LEED Gold Certified

IBM achieves its first LEED Gold certification for the company’s green data center in North Carolina, on the Research Triangle Park campus.  The facility is modular in design and capable of scaling addition capacity quickly without impact to the existing datacenter operations.  The sustainable design incorporates features, such as:

  • Existing building reuse;
  • Construction material recycling;
  • Water management;
  • Energy conservation;

This design surpasses energy efficiency performance across the global footprint of IBM data centers.  …

…   “The new facility, which is the company's most technologically advanced green data center, officially opened in February 2010 and is IBM's first LEED Gold certified data center.  IBM was awarded the LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) which certifies which facilities meet the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

A key factor in IBM's LEED recognition was the company's re-use of an existing building on its RTP campus.  The construction reused 95 percent of the original building's shell and in the process IBM recycled 90 percent of the materials from the original building and ensured 25 percent of newly purchased material came from recycled products.

These factors helped reduce the carbon footprint associated with 100,000 square feet building by nearly 50 percent.  One of the unique features of the IBM facility is a rainwater collection system which generates non-potable water to be used in the facility. “   …

SAP LEED Platinum Building Design Elements Demonstrate Enterprise Commitment to Sustainability

SAP's enterprise commitment to sustainability translates well into its facility expansions. The company's new office building at its Newtown Square campus demonstrates the potential that sustainable design practices can offer. The building is under review by the US Green Building Council for LEED Platinum-level certification and incorporates the smart use of sunlight, a greef roof, intelligent water management and recycling, geothermal heating and cooling, and time shifting of energy consumption. SAP collaborated with FXFOWLE Architects to deliver this achievement. Green construction techniques were adhered to. Here are highlights of sustainable design features from SAP's release. ...
... "Located on the 110-acre campus of SAP North America and adjacent to its existing LEED-certified building, the new building features a floor-to-ceiling glass exterior and an open-space plan that takes maximum advantage of daylight. The green grass roofs, the use of native and regional vegetation species in landscaping and the maintenance of extensive open space highlight SAP's goal of integrating the building with the surrounding natural environment. The new building also incorporates numerous innovative features to reduce water use. Rainwater from the green roof and other areas is collected in a 50,000-gallon cistern, which supplies water for landscape irrigation and the flushing of toilets in some of the building's bathrooms. Additionally, low-flow bathroom fixtures will greatly reduce water usage, with an expected saving of over one million gallons of water per year. Energy-efficient features abound in the building. Geothermal wells use the constant ground temperature of the earth to both heat and cool areas of the building. Lighting systems based on the concept of daylight harvesting are controlled by sensors that dim the lighting levels and raise or lower window shades based on the level of sunlight coming through the triple-glazed glass exterior wall. A hybrid air conditioning system produces ice during the overnight hours when energy demands and electric rates are lowest, with the chilled water from the melting ice used to cool the building during the heat of the day. Sanyo Waterless Clothes Washer

Sanyo Waterless CLothes Washer

 We've seen washing machines that tell you whose turn it is, offer remote monitoring, sterilize garb, require no water, and tackle more stains than we knew were possible to pick up, but Sanyo's forthcoming machine lives life on the greener side, and cuts down your trips to the dry cleaners to boot. The aptly-named AQUA was spotted as CES, and aside from the thoughtfully designed entry door that's high enough for folks to reach while standing up, this gizmo rocks a unique "Aqualoop" feature that allows it to recycle water for use in future washes. Moreover, the Air Wash function enables owners to clean clothes at home that are typically reserved for the dry cleaners, as it "infuses" your swag with odor / bacteria-killing chemicals without the use of water, leaving your wearables fresh and your body at home. Although there's no word on price or future availability just yet, we've still got more than a few reservations when it comes to reusing soiled liquid to, um, clean dirty clothing.

Xeros: Ultra Low Water Washing Machine

ohw ity works - Xeros Washing machine

Everyone (most everyone reading this blog?) washes clothes.  Modern washers are a great time saver but consume a lot of water ... especially if you do several loads per week.washing machine

Imagine washing clothes with a cup of water.  Impossible?  Read on for more ...

" ... Xeros, a Leeds University spin-off, is currently commercializing a washing machine which can clean clothes using just a cup of water."

" ... use of half-centimeter plastic chips to do the actual cleaning. The machine heats what little water (mixed with detergent) is used to dissolve the dirt which is then absorbed by the plastic chips. These chips, ... 44 pounds per cycle, can be reused within a six month timeframe. ... able to remove a variety of everyday dirt such as coffee and lipstick stains."

" ... since the machine only uses a cup of water per kilogram of laundry, the clothes come up almost dry, eliminating the necessity to tumble dry. The company has already received a $1 million funding and expect to put washing machines out in the market by 2009 at the earliest."

Storage Devices for the Electric Grid Smooth Power

Battery PAck - Charleston, WV

One problem with the power grid is that there is no "storage pool"  ... power is there and if not used it is gone -- even if not needed.

Companies are looking at ways to "store" power; ranging from compressed air storage to capacitors to water storage to massive flywheels.  This can be used to store power when demand is low and release it when it is high ... allowing plants to run at a constant rate regardless of lead and then let the power flow back when the load changes ... one great use is for solar or wind systems ... power can be stored and then released when there is no wind or too much cloud cover.

Read on for more ...

" ... battery attached to American Electric Power's grid in Charleston, W.V. ...  a buffer, able to generate a few hours of power for an overloaded substation"

" ... three of them, capable of discharging 6 megawatts, will cost about $27 million. That's part of the reason that American Electric Power's use of storage on the grid is the exception, rather than the rule."

Power storage device" ... two markets when it comes to utility-grade energy storage. ... storage devices that can store several hours or even weeks of electricity. ... are designed to make power generation resources, particularly wind or solar power, available when it's needed"

" ... other ... is ... for "grid stabilization," which is like the short-term, random access memory that a PC uses.
