Drexel University (Philadelphia, Pa.) Uses Viridity Energy’s Smart Grid Technology

Drexel University is deploying Viridity Energy’s VPower System™ to provide a real time view of power usage.  By better understanding real time usage and real time pricing they can buy power when costs are low / lower sand sell back when power is more expensive.  This is smart grid technology.

Drexel hopes to show how they can “ … manage its energy costs and environmental impact … will allow the University to purchase power at times of the day when demand is low and sell excess power back to the larger power grid.”

Drexel will look at how organizations can balance solar, wind and energy storage to save money and even become less impacted by grid disturbances / outages.

PECO, the local electricity generator, is working with Drexel to see how this might be applied more broadly across the region.

Solar tower power plant in Mohave desert

will track sun to convert thermal energy into steam, powering turbines to create electricity.  …Siemens power plant

…   “Siemens will now also supply two steam turbines each rated at 133 MW and two generators for Ivanpah Units 2 and 3. The SST-900 turbine is ideally suited for deployment in solar thermal power plants.

This turbine is known for its fast startup and shutdown capability, and the fact that it can very flexibly track the respective operating conditions of solar thermal power plants. Steam reheat enhances the efficiency of the turbine and thus of the entire power plant.

Solar tower technology enables the bundling of sunlight by sun-tracking mirrors, which is directly reflected onto a receiver at the top of a tower where steam is produced to drive a steam turbine that will ultimately generate electricity.”   …

Gainesville Florida Solar Projects Lined up til 2016

GRU logo

Gainesville Regional Utilities, Gainesville, Florida's utility pormots solar and offers assistance to businesses and residences that will install solar.

" ... energy-producing solar panels in Gainesville has skyrocketed since the city implemented its new solar incentive program ... waiting list for the program - which is the first solar feed-in tariff in the United States and offers above-market-rate prices for electricity produced by privately owned and installed solar panels - now stretches until 2016."

Between the price GRU offers for the electricity and state rebates for solar panel installation, the feed-in tariff should prove lucrative for those installing solar photovoltaics in the program.

However, the program is limited on a first-come, first-served basis to 4 new megawatts of electricity a year from solar power - more than double the megawatts produced locally a year ago.

The first change proposed Thursday would allow those people waiting in line to install solar panels in 2010 to install the panels now and be paid market rate for the energy the panels produce until the contract they've signed up for kicks in and they are able to receive the higher rate.

"We don't have anything in the program that allows us to pay them for electricity," said Ed Regan, assistant general manager of strategic planning at GRU. "If they're in the queue for 2010, a year for which we know the price, then we would let them build it early."

Another part of that is that GRU is proposing to reinstate the commercial net-metering system that was discontinued when the feed-in tariff was adopted.

Net metering allows people with solar panels to use their own electricity, and if there is any excess energy produced, GRU credits the bill.

The other changes are largely administrative in nature.

"There was a fair amount of gaming or jockeying for position that made us institute additional rules," Regan said of the somewhat unexpected rush that filled up all 4 megawatts of solar panels for the first year in a matter of days.

At least one person has challenged technical terms in the ordinance, arguing the language in the ordinance allows more solar energy to be installed every year, or that the ordinance has fixed prices out to the year 2030.

Regan recommended the commission approve language for the ordinance specifying that only 4 megawatts will be permitted in the program every year and that the ordinance should be changed so that the payout rate after the year 2010 says "to be determined."

"I think Gainesville can be proud to be on the forefront," Hunzinger said. "We have heard some criticism saying 'do not use Gainesville as a model.' To me that's personally, professionally disturbing to hear. However, I do understand there will be criticism. No good deed goes unpunished. The primary reason for implementing the (feed-in tariff) was to encourage solar PV installations in our service area."

The Smart Energy Grid: What it Is and What is Can Do

The Smart Grid is coming to a utility near you. But just what is a smart grid and what does it mean for you as a consumer? This "smartplanet" video with Silver Spring Networks CTO Raj Vaswani will explain. In a nutshell ... the smart grid gives you visibility to your energy usage in real time and allows you to take advantage of more favorable times to use large chunks of energy ... and save some money. Utilities get to smooth out there load so there are fewer peaks and ideally allow them to delay building new generating capacity (time consuming, expensive and possibly polluting). Dow Captures Solar Power with DOWTHERM

sloar panels There are multiple approaches to using solar to create power ... one option is PV (photovoltaic) where panels convert sunlight directly to DC current ... another is CSP (concentrated solar power).

CSP is a form of solar power that uses mirrors to focus the suns rays on panels ... these panels have a heat transfer fluid in them that then is used to generate steam which drives a trubine to produce electricity.

>>> Basically a nuclear type approach with solar replacing the nuclear energy source.

Storage Devices for the Electric Grid Smooth Power

Battery PAck - Charleston, WV

One problem with the power grid is that there is no "storage pool"  ... power is there and if not used it is gone -- even if not needed.

Companies are looking at ways to "store" power; ranging from compressed air storage to capacitors to water storage to massive flywheels.  This can be used to store power when demand is low and release it when it is high ... allowing plants to run at a constant rate regardless of lead and then let the power flow back when the load changes ... one great use is for solar or wind systems ... power can be stored and then released when there is no wind or too much cloud cover.

Read on for more ...

" ... battery attached to American Electric Power's grid in Charleston, W.V. ...  a buffer, able to generate a few hours of power for an overloaded substation"

Hong Kong Utilities Agree to Link Rates to Pollution

Hong Kong

Jan 7, 2008 - Hong Kong - "Hong Kong's two electric power companies agreed ... to ...rate of return on assets based partly on how much pollution they emit, an approach that could someday be a model for mainland China's ..."CLP Castel Peak Power Plant - Hong Kong

"If either company exceeds regulatory limits for any pollutant, then it would be required to charge less for its electricity, reducing its allowed rate of return  ...[if] manage to cut their pollution by even more than required, then they raise prices so as to earn bonuses ...on their rate of return. A complicated calculation also allows them to charge slightly more for electricity as they make progress in using more renewable energy."

Marine Turbines for Generating Electricity in the UK

MArine Turbine

"Marine Current Turbines Ltd (MCT) is developing radically new technology, backed by the UK government, for exploiting tidal currents for large-scale power generation. We do not have any commercially available products at present, but we aim to achieve this by 2007-8."

Map of UK - Red Dots Point to Possible Tidal Streams for Electricity

"The basic requirements for cost-effective power generation from tidal streams using MCT's technology are a mean spring peak velocity exceeding about 2.25 to 2.5m/s (4.5 to 5 knots) with a depth of water of 20 to 30m - the red spots on the map (right) show some of the locations meeting these criteria around the UK and northern France."

"Our technology represents a novel method for generating electricity from a huge energy resource in the sea. ... even rarer if the technology, as in this case:-"

  • "produces no pollution and has negligible environmental impact"

  • "delivers energy to a predictable timetable"

  • "has the potential to make a major contribution to future energy needs"

"... the relentless energy of marine currents has been obvious from the earliest days of seafaring, it is only now that ... this a technically feasible and economically viable possibility."

Solar Cells that Work All Day Long

Jud Ready, a senior research engineer at the Georgia Tech Research Institute holding 3-D Solar Cell

Here is a new "twist" on the design of solar

cells that allows for a longer "sweet spot" of power generation.

>> The "twist" is that instead of being flat these solar cells are 3-D.

"Solar cells generally crank out the most power at noon, when the sun is at its highest point and can strike the cell at a 90-degree angle. Before and after noon, efficiencies drop off. But researchers [at] Georgia Tech Research Institute ... prototype ... whose surface consists of hundreds of thousands of 100-micrometer-high towers, catches light at many angles and actually works best in the morning and afternoon."Cross section ... cadmium telluride ... around a carbon nanotube tower

"... When the sun is at a 90-degree angle, the prototype delivers only 3.5 percent efficiency. ... and is actually at its peak efficiency--7 percent--when light comes in at a 45-degree angle. That means the device operates at relatively high efficiencies during much of the day and has two efficiency peaks: one before noon, and one after noon."

"While those efficiencies are too low for commercialization, ...  working on optimizing the size and spacing of his towers as well as their chemical composition. As a first application, his sights are set on powering spacecraft and satellites, which could benefit from solar cells that don't require a mechanical means of moving the orientation of the cell to keep it facing the sun."

New Jersey Clean Choice Power Program

New Jersey Clean Power Choice Program What can an individual do to generate clean power?  Not everyone is in a position financially or other) to put up solar panels or a wind turbine or a hydro power facility.

>>BUT:   If you live in New Jersey (and other states including Pennsylvania) you can choose to have part of your electricity generated from these sources.

Sound appealing?  Read on ...New JErsey's Clean Energy Program

"... CleanPower Choice Program ... is a statewide program that allows you to choose clean, renewable sources of energy. ... you're choosing to support ... renewable energy sources that diversify our energy supply ... Solar power. Wind power. Low-impact or small hydro power. Landfill gas power. Clean power, that's good for the environment, good for the climate, and good for New Jersey."

"... electricity is generated from clean, renewable energy sources located in New Jersey and the mid-Atlantic region. Importantly, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities' Office of Clean Energy verifies that renewable energy is delivered into the Mid Atlantic power pool that serves your needs. ... each household that participates ... can reduce CO2 emissions by over 10,000 lbs. per year, which is equivalent to planting 1.35 acres of trees!*"

Generating Electricity from Heat

Thermoacostic Heat Engine - Univ of Utah

"June 4, 2007- University of Utah physicists developed small devices that turn heat into sound and then into electricity. ... holds promise for changing waste heat into electricity, harnessing solar energy and cooling computers..."

"We are converting waste heat to electricity in an efficient, simple way by using sound," says Orest Symko, a University of Utah physics professor who leads the effort. “It is a new source of renewable energy from waste heat."  University of Utah

"The research is funded by the U.S. Army, which is interested in "taking care of waste heat from radar, and also producing a portable source of electrical energy which you can use in the battlefield to run electronics" he says.

"Symko expects the devices could be used within two years as an alternative to photovoltaic cells for converting sunlight into electricity. The heat engines also could be used to cool laptop and other computers that generate more heat as their electronics grow more complex. And Symko foresees using the devices to generate electricity from heat that now is released from nuclear power plant cooling towers.
