Solar cell efficiency gains

SunPower pushes the limits of solar cell conversion efficiency above twenty four percent.  The new solar cells are produced in its SPML Philippines facility, outside of Manila.  …

…   “it has produced a full-scale solar cell with a sunlight to electricity conversion efficiency of 24.2 percent at its manufacturing plant in the Philippines.

This is a new world record, confirmed by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL), for large area silicon wafers.

Improved cell efficiency reduces the levelized cost of energy by increasing the energy production from each wafer manufactured into a SunPower solar cell.

For the same reason, increased efficiency reduces the cost per watt and cost per kilowatt-hour for feedstock and materials, depreciation and other manufacturing expenses, installation time, land and system operations, and related maintenance.”   …

SunPower Swanson Awarded Energy Environment Innovation

Dr. Richard Swanson, the president and chief technical officer of SunPower Corporation, is honored with The Economist's Energy and Environment Innovation Award for 2009 for his contributions to the development of high-efficiency solar photovoltaic cells. ...
... "Swanson is one of the world's most recognized leaders in the advancement of photovoltaics (PV) and a pioneer in commercializing cost-effective PV power systems. In 2006, he was honored with the prestigious Becquerel Prize for Outstanding Merits in Photovoltaics, and in 2002 he was presented with the William R. Cherry Award by the IEEE for outstanding contributions to the PV field. In 1991, Swanson resigned from his faculty position to focus his attention to SunPower Corporation, a company he founded in 1985 to develop and commercialize cost-effective, high-efficiency photovoltaic power systems. SunPower's all-back contact solar cells powered Honda to victory in the 1993 World Solar Challenge, and were also used to power Helios, NASA's high-altitude solar powered airplane to a world-record altitude of 96,500 feet. Applied Materials: Largest Solar Array for US corporation

Solar Panels over Parked Cars ...

"Applied Materials  ... announced completion of two SunPower solar power systems totaling 2.1 megawatts at Applied Materials' corporate facilities in Sunnyvale, Calif. ...the largest solar power deployment at a corporate facility in the United States."

" ... includes a 950 kilowatt SunPower PowerGuard(R) installation
and a 1.2 megawatt SunPower(R) Tracker installation atop an
elevated parking canopy. ... follows the sun as it moves across the
sky, increasing sunlight capture by up to 25 percent over
conventional fixed-tilt systems. Both systems use SunPower solar
panels, ... SunPower uses Applied Materials' Baccini technology in
its solar cell manufacturing process.

" ... reports that its solar installation has generated 1,413 megawatt hours of power. ... system is
expected to replace more than 2,700 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, ... equivalent to
the annual carbon emissions from approximately 450 passenger cars."
