Atlantic Wind Connection

The Atlantic Wind connection is expected to be the backbone infrastructure to bring offshore energy from the mid-Atlantic states of NJ, and Delaware, Maryland and Virginia  to the grid.  The sponsors include GOOGLE and is led by Trans-Elect.  Trans-Elect is a independent power transmission company.

The area off the mid-Atlantic “ …  offers more than 60,000 MW of offshore wind potential ... allow for the development of large, distant wind farms, mitigating visibility issues and allowing for greater energy capture from stronger winds. …”

“ … single offshore backbone with a limited number of landfall points will minimize the environmental impacts of building multiple individual radial lines to shore.  …”

Along with bringing renewable energy to the grid there are expected “ … between 133,000 and 212,000 U.S. jobs …” from construction.  Based on 54,000 MV of wind capacity 9estimate for 2030)  it was estimated that there would be of 43,000 permanent jobs created to run and maintain the system.

Harvard University Research on Green Energy Storage Batteries

Green Energy sources like wind and solar do not always produce power in the same cycle as needed by users.  That is, the wind might blow at night not during work hours … so an effective “green energy storage” system could really make green energy sources more useful.  “Green energy storage” needs to be relatively cheap or the green energy is not cost effective.

Harvard is conducting research on a “flow battery” that might provide “ …  cost-effective, grid-scale electrical energy storage based on eco-friendly small organic molecules …..  “Flow batteries may make stationary storage viable in the marketplace, and that will enable wind and solar to displace a lot more fossil fuel.”

Flow batteries are like a rechargeable fuel cell using liquid chemicals to store generated  power.  Current technology uses vanadium redox (cost prohibitive due to raw material prices) or molten sulfur (must operate at very high temperatures).

Harvard’s research is looking at small organic molecules that are found in plans and can be made at low cost, are non-toxic and work room temperatures. These would offer high power density and could be co-located with the generating power source and would link directly to the power grid.

Oregon's Newbury Volcano Potential Geothermal Power Source

A dormant volcano in Oregon, the Newbury,  is the pilot site for exploring volcanoes as a route to geothermal energy.  Receiving approval from “ … The U.S. Bureau of Land Management …  Alta Rock Energy, will drill … wells ...” to power turbines and generate power.

The footprint of the wells is extremely small given the energy potential.  The site is basically a drill pad and “… occupies … five acres, and all of the equipment will be on that pad …”  Geothermal is a constant source of power unlike wind and solar which are not always available around the clock – so no back up power source is needed.

Newbury is targeted to produce “ …  about 2,000 megawatts of electricity, basically enough power for a city of one million people.”

While somewhat similar to the process used to “frack” for oil there is no hydrocarbons burned so there are no emissions.

Apple's Very Green Data Center

Apple’s new data center in Maiden, NC is green by design.  It has a white roof to reduce cooling needs and sourced a significant amount of the materials locally.

60% of the power needed will be generated onsite from solar arrays and fuel cells.  The remainder will come from the grid but will be from renewable sources making the site “ … the most environmentally sound data center ever built.”

The combined output of the solar arrays and fuel cells is 124 million kWh – the amount of energy needed for almost 10,900 homes.

US's First Grid Power from Tidal Powered Turbine

Ocean Renewable Power Company is piloting their TidGen system near Eastport, Maine.  This will be the FIRST wave / tide powered system to bring energy to the power grid.

The turbine rotates on a horizontal axis and will generate 180 Kw.  Construction started in March 2012 and power is expected to flow to the grid by October 1, 2012.

Zotos: One of US's Top 20 On-Site Wind Power Generators


Zotos makes professional hair care products.  They also are going green and have major initiatives under way for wind power, carbon offsetting and greener packaging.

“ … we must change the way we see our world. … Zotos is … implementing one of the largest private industrial sustainability programs in the nation.”

They have been recognized by the US-EPA as one of the Top 20 On-site Wind Generators.  Two turbines at their Geneva NY plant that “ … generate approximately 6.5 million kWh of electricity … annually … provide more than 60 percent of Zotos’ energy requirements … expected to reduce overall CO2 emissions by 50 percent in 2011.”

Panasonic Technology for Hybrid Car Carrier


Panasonic along with Mitsui O.S.K Lines, Ltd. and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries are working on technologies to reduce CO2 emissions from ocean going ships.

The test platform is the “EMERALD ACE”.  The ship will be fitted with “ … solar panels (160kW planned) and lithium-ion rechargeable batteries (approximately 2.2MWh planned) … “

The solar panels charge batteries that provide power when in the harbor – in place of diesel generators reducing CO2 emissions.  The batteries are used as ballast and do not impact the carrying capacity of the ship.

Exelon Turns Chicago Brownfield Site to Solar Farm

Exelon is repurposing a brownfield site in the Chicago area into a solar farm.  The 41 acre site have 32,292 solar panels and generates 14,000 mWatt-hrs yearly.

“ … uses SunPower® solar tracking systems that tilt the panels toward the sun as it moves across the sky, increasing energy production by up to 25%.”

The energy generated by the solar panels offsets “ … more than 30 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year …”

Exelon also remediated the site which had been vacant for more than 30 years.

Could Data Centers Heat our Homes and Offices ?

Data centers use a lot of energy to power servers and in doing so generate a lot of heat.  Additional energy is then needed to keep the servers and other equipment from overheating (air conditioning or chiller systems).  Could the heat from servers be repurposed instead of cooled ?

According to a research paper (link below) “ … “data furnaces” could offer a lower carbon footprint … [in] home offices or office buildings. … servers could … become a primary heating system for these buildings …”

There are obstacle to overcome but in theory it seems to make sense.

What do you think ?  Will there ever be a server farm in your apartment building / complex or office tower?

Wind Energy without Turbines from Cornell University Prof.

Cornell professor Francis Moon (photo) has done some research on generating wind power without turbine blades.

The research looks at “ … vibro-wind power: harvesting energy from the wind as it flows around commercial and residential buildings.  …”

If scalable this would might be a source of power in many large cities bringing the generation source close to the point of use. Large citie4s with multi story buildings may have more power potential with vibro-wind than solar as the roof-print dwarfs the outside surface area.

Novel Idea - Wind Tubines on Highway Signs

An Arizona State University student has Wind Turbine on Highway Sign Posta novel design to mount HORIZONTAL wind turbines on overhead highway signposts.  By modifying the existing signposts they can be become wind energy sources. See mocked up picture at RIGHT >>>

" ... estimates ... on the highways outside of Phoenix, ... each turbine would produce enough energy annually to power a 700-square-foot apartment. ..."

The idea is that the breeze from the moving cars and the wind can generate "free energy" for the grid - and not require any additional energy use by cars and trucks.  In Arizona many of the highways have a 70 mph speed limit.

University of Nebraska - Roadway Wind/Solar Hybrid Power Generation and Distribution System

University of Nebraska - LincolnStreet sgns and utility power poles are almost everywhere.  A project at The University of Nebraska is looking into ways to use wind power and solar panels on signs to power roadway lights and traffic signals.  Any excess power will go into the local energy grid.

The units combine solar and wind generators and Prototype Roadway Wind/Solar Hybrid Power Generation and Distribution System feature batteries for storage.  " ... Each unit consists of a wind turbine generator and one or more PV panels mounted on the top of the pole for electric power generation."

Vestas announced their V164-7.0 - the rotor has a diameter of 164 meters and the turbine produces 7 MW of power.  This huge turbine is " ... specifically designed for the roughest North Sea conditions ..."

Veatas has an installed base of 580 offshore turbines - equal to 43 % of all offshore turbines worldwide.

Altaeros Energies Airborne Wind Turbine (AWT)

Altaeros found a way to capture the wind energy available at higher altitudes.  They use a helium filled "ring-wing" to bring a turbine to altitude and keep it stable.

They were a semi-finalist in the 2010 Clean Energy Contest sponsored by MIT.

Heat from Commuters in Stockholm’s Central Station Serves Nearby Office Block

Here is a very interesting story from Sweden.  Engineers in Sweden have found a way to recover the excess heat generated by commuters in Stockholm’s main train station.


The technology is really not that different from any other heat exchange process but is certainly unique.  Certain factors help to make this application workable including the low winter temperatures in Sweden and their relatively high cost of energy. 

The energy created from businesses (like bakeries and restaurants that generate heat) and people is able to help a nearby office block reduce their heating costs by 20%.  For a large office block this can really add up … this waste heat from the Central Station is a valuable energy for an office block nearby.

US Army Evaluating Solar Tents

The Army and its operations are energy intensive.  Getting energy to remote or war ravaged areas is both expensive and dangerous.

The Army is looking into tents that incorporate PV solar panels that can be used to charge batteries and small electronics like computers.  In addition to not having to bring in fuel they can travel lighter by not needing a generator (or a smaller one).

Using " ... Flexible Photovoltaics (PV), ... convert light energy into electricity ... ideal for charging up batteries, making sure your (communications), night vision goggles and computers are powered ..."

The key is technology that makes PV "panels" flexible so they are lightweight and foldable / packable.  While still in the testing phase they may be deployed soon.

Snyder's of Hanover's solar Farm

Snyder's of Hanover (PA) announced construction of the largest solar energy system in PA in October 2010.  Covering 26 acres across from their corporate HQ (in Hanover, PA) the "farm" will have more than 15,000 panels.

Kristianstad Sweden Uses Biofuels Not Fossil Fuels for Heat and Electricity

 Kristianstad SwedeKristianstadn uses no fossil fuels for heating.  Instead they uses biomass from farming leftovers.  80,000 homes heated by biomass and not fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas!  And this is an area of the world where it gets VERY COLD !

Since solar and wind would not be effective in Kristianstad they worked with biomass.  " ... remains from farming ... manure, potato peels, pig intestines, and even cookies, .... to create biogas  ... a certain type of  methane, ... heat of the entire city, and to provide electricity for the city as well."

The driving force for the move away from fossil fuels was to protect their environment and they did not want to import fossil fules from abroad.

Philadelphia to Get Solar Farm

Philadelphia wants to get 20 % of its electricity from renewable sources by 2015.

" ... Solar City Partnership will develop a strategy through which 2.3 MW of solar electricity will be generated within the city of Philadelphia by 2011 and 57.8 MW by 2021... "

The Solar City Partnership is a JV between the U.S. Department of Energy and the City of Philadelphia.  

Two Systems under consideration are ...

- a 900,000 kWh solar system at the Naval Yard.

- installations at city owned water treatment facilities (Philadelphia Water Department).

Rentricity Inc. Flow-to-Wire(sm)


Rentricity uses energy recovery techniques to get energy from " ...  excess pressure in water mains ..." and can generate " ... between 20 and 300 kilowatts of electricity..." 

Somewhat similar to wave energy but not really renewable.

The power can be sent to the grid and used to offset electricity purchases.

Since this electricity can then be sold onto the grid, Rentricity gives its generating partners an additional source of revenue and a way to offset rising electricity rates.

Google Looks at Energy "Pipeline" in Mid-Atlantic Region

Walmart Partners with Solar City for Additonal PV Systems

Walmart is planning to add solar systems to an additional 20 - 30 in California and Arizona using new technology lower cost PV cells.

" ... leveraging our global scale to ... help develop markets for new technologies ... commitment to solving business challenges through technology."

The systems are expected to provide about 25 % of the total energy needs of each location.

Some details about the systems:

- can product up to 22.5 kW / yr - equiv to the energy needed for 1750 home / yr

- avoid 11,650 metric tons CO2 - equiv to 3000 cars

The technology planned includes gallium selenide and cadmium terruride films and are exected to use less raw materials then earlier versions of PV cells.

SolarCity will do the design work as well as install, own and maintain the systems.

Here is a novel idea to turn dog waste into methane ...   "dog waste ... decomposes over time. The anaerobic conditions inside the digester create methane gas ... "  The methane gas lights a gas lamp.

Britain is set to open the world's largest wind farm off Kent (UK) on the English Chanel.  This facility will comprise 100 wind turbines each 300 ft tall; enough to power 200,000 homes.

SunPower Gets US Gov't Contracts

One for the Air Force is to be the largest federal solar site in the US at Luke AFB in Glendale, Arizona.

Gainesville Florida Solar Projects Lined up til 2016

Gainesville Regional Utilities, Gainesville, Florida's utility pormots solar and offers assistance to businesses and residences that will install solar.

" ... energy-producing solar panels in Gainesville has skyrocketed since the city implemented its new solar incentive program ... waiting list for the program - which is the first solar feed-in tariff in the United States and offers above-market-rate prices for electricity produced by privately owned and installed solar panels - now stretches until 2016."

Between the price GRU offers for the electricity and state rebates for solar panel installation, the feed-in tariff should prove lucrative for those installing solar photovoltaics in the program.

However, the program is limited on a first-come, first-served basis to 4 new megawatts of electricity a year from solar power - more than double the megawatts produced locally a year ago.

The first change proposed Thursday would allow those people waiting in line to install solar panels in 2010 to install the panels now and be paid market rate for the energy the panels produce until the contract they've signed up for kicks in and they are able to receive the higher rate.

"We don't have anything in the program that allows us to pay them for electricity," said Ed Regan, assistant general manager of strategic planning at GRU. "If they're in the queue for 2010, a year for which we know the price, then we would let them build it early."

Another part of that is that GRU is proposing to reinstate the commercial net-metering system that was discontinued when the feed-in tariff was adopted.

Net metering allows people with solar panels to use their own electricity, and if there is any excess energy produced, GRU credits the bill.

The other changes are largely administrative in nature.

"There was a fair amount of gaming or jockeying for position that made us institute additional rules," Regan said of the somewhat unexpected rush that filled up all 4 megawatts of solar panels for the first year in a matter of days.

At least one person has challenged technical terms in the ordinance, arguing the language in the ordinance allows more solar energy to be installed every year, or that the ordinance has fixed prices out to the year 2030.

Regan recommended the commission approve language for the ordinance specifying that only 4 megawatts will be permitted in the program every year and that the ordinance should be changed so that the payout rate after the year 2010 says "to be determined."

"I think Gainesville can be proud to be on the forefront," Hunzinger said. "We have heard some criticism saying 'do not use Gainesville as a model.' To me that's personally, professionally disturbing to hear. However, I do understand there will be criticism. No good deed goes unpunished. The primary reason for implementing the (feed-in tariff) was to encourage solar PV installations in our service area."

Portsmouth Abbey was founded in 1926 and has +/- 340 students in grades 9 - 12.  They have a beautiful 500 acre campus and are just 10 miles from Newport Rhode Island.

"Rhode Island’s first-ever utility-scale wind turbine ...165 foot tall, 660 kilowatt (kW) wind turbine will be the largest single investment ever made by the Rhode Island Renewable Energy Fund, producing 1.25 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year."

"... is expected to generate 40 percent of the annual electricity demand of the ... School, one of Rhode Island’s largest consumers of electricity."

on the one year anniversary --- "statistical data that showed how Portsmouth Abbey saved nearly $223,000 in the first year of the wind turbine's operation, through lower electricity payments to the utility, electricity sold back to the grid, and renewable energy credits."

Solar Cells that Work All Day Long

Here is a new "twist" on the design of solar

cells that allows for a longer "sweet spot" of power generation.

>> The "twist" is that instead of being flat these solar cells are 3-D.

"Solar cells generally crank out the most power at noon, when the sun is at its highest point and can strike the cell at a 90-degree angle. Before and after noon, efficiencies drop off. But researchers [at] Georgia Tech Research Institute ... prototype ... whose surface consists of hundreds of thousands of 100-micrometer-high towers, catches light at many angles and actually works best in the morning and afternoon."Cross section ... cadmium telluride ... around a carbon nanotube tower

"... When the sun is at a 90-degree angle, the prototype delivers only 3.5 percent efficiency. ... and is actually at its peak efficiency--7 percent--when light comes in at a 45-degree angle. That means the device operates at relatively high efficiencies during much of the day and has two efficiency peaks: one before noon, and one after noon."

"While those efficiencies are too low for commercialization, ...  working on optimizing the size and spacing of his towers as well as their chemical composition. As a first application, his sights are set on powering spacecraft and satellites, which could benefit from solar cells that don't require a mechanical means of moving the orientation of the cell to keep it facing the sun."

The Township will start purchasing 5% of its energy needs from PECO Wind for the remainder of 2007 and purchase 20% of its energy needs starting in 2008, then re-evaluate the provider and percentage annually thereafter."

"In December, 2006, the ... Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution committing to the Pennsylvania Clean Energy Communities Campaign. ... a partnership between the Pennsylvania Sustainable Development Fund and SmartPower, ... whose purpose is to assist communities in the support and purchase of clean, renewable energy. Their goal is to help Tredyffrin Township qualify as Clean Energy Community. Once we have qualified, we will receive a free 1 kW solar energy system worth $10,000 to put on any building of our choice. Tredyffrin Township has already taken the first step towards becoming a Pennsylvania Clean Energy Community by passing a resolution committing to use 20% clean energy for all municipal buildings and facilities by 2010.

Better:  FAR off shore Windmills where the winds are stronger and the windmills are not visible?

A Problem:  NIMBY (who can blame them?)

The Solution:  Part windmill.  Part floating platform. 


"Offshore wind turbines are an excellent source of power that could potentially serve hundreds of thousands of consumers ... (using) floating platforms hundreds of miles out to sea, where the winds are even stronger? That is where Paul D. Sclavounos comes in. The MIT professor of mechanical engineering and naval architecture spent decades designing and analyzing large floating structures for deep-sea oil and gas exploration."

" ... Their design calls for a tension leg platform, a system in which long steel cables, or “tethers,” connect the corners of the platform to a concrete-block or other mooring system on the ocean floor. The platform and turbine gain their support from buoyancy."

"... could work in water depths ranging from 30 to 200 meters, Sclavounos said. In the Northeast, they could be 50 to 150 kilometers from shore. And the turbine atop each platform could be big, which is an economic advantage in the wind-farm business. The MIT-NREL design assumes a 5.0 megawatt (MW) experimental turbine now being developed by industry. (Onshore units are 1.5 MW; conventional offshore units are 3.6 MW.)"

For Pennsylvania (where I live) I found over 19 providers with some offering more that one source of power.  Residential rates range from  0.5 - 7.5 cents / KWhr.

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to buy Wind Power

PECO Waymart Wind Energy Center


The Philadelphia International Airport announced on March 5th, 2007 that it will "buy 13,000 megawatts a year of wind energy from the PECO wind program.  City officials said they believe that the five-year deal was the largest renewable-energy purchase by a U.S airport.  ... equivalent to the electric power used by 1,300 homes. ... generated at PECO's wind-energy facility at Waymart, Pa. ..."

Farm Waste Forms Fuel Tank: Corn Has Dual Role

Researchers have developed carbon briquettes with nanopores that store natural gas at a extremely high density, 180X, and at low pressure, 1/7th of conventional tanks.  This research effort is aimed at enabling automobiles to run on methane, an abundant domestic fuel, as a cost-effective alternative to gasoline.  National Science Foundation's Partnerships for Corn's role in alternative energyInnovation program funded the research project with a $600,000 grant.  Corn's role in the alternative fuel economy would range from bioethanol production from corn kernels and natural-gas tanks from corncobs.   ...

... "The carbon briquettes contain networks of pores and channels that can hold methane at a high density without the cost of extreme compression, ultimately storing the fuel at a pressure of only 500 pounds per square inch, the pressure found in natural gas pipelines.

In addition to efforts to commercialize the technology, the researchers are now focusing on the next generation briquette, one that will store more natural gas and cost less to produce. Pfeifer believes this next generation of briquette might even hold promise for storing hydrogen. " ...

Modern Cargo Ships May Use Sail Power

SkySail GmbH & Co Sail Power may be the next big thing in energy savings for ocean going cargo vessels.

Philadelphia's First E85 and B20 Station Opens


Shell E85 PumpPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania

E85 flex fuel is a blend of 85% ethanol (derived from corn or soy) and 15% gasoline.  Only E85 capable cars can use this fuel. 

B20 is a of 20% biodiesel and 80 % regular diesel fuel.

Fuel stations that carry E85 and / or B20 have been slow to emerge in the northeast part of the U.S.

Technology Ups Ethanol MPG Boost

Ethanol Boosting SystemsMassachusetts Institute of Technology scientists have found a novel way to increase MPG with ethanol - and it is not E85!

They found that a "carefully designed and timed direct injection of ethanol through the mechanism of evaporative cooling and its own intrinsic properties as a fuel , is equivalent to increasing the overall fuel octane rating of the mixture of ethanol and gasoline to more than 130."  Typical motor fuels are in the range of 87 (regular) to 91 / 91 (hi-test).  This is achieved by "use of a limited amount of separately stored ethanol."

One result of this is that a "3.0 liter V6 cold be replaced by a 1.5 liter 4 cylinder engine."

EBS is working with Ford Motor to bring this technology to market.

Two Biofuels from one Crop: Ethanol and Biodiesel

VeraSun EnergyVeraSun Erergy Corporation (NYSE: VSE)  has a process to get more energy from each bushel of corn.  They can make both ethanol and biodiesel from corn.  VeraSun is "the nations second largest ethanol producer". 

Here's the process.   "VeraSun identified an opportunity to utilize oil extracted from distillers grains, undervalued as a feed component, as an excellent feedstock for biodiesel. Removing the oil from distillers grains both increases the value of the oil for fuel use, and enhances the resulting distillers grains as a livestock feed by concentrating protein and reducing fat content."

"Biodiesel can be blended with petroleum diesel to run in all existing diesel engines."  Production has grown from "75 million gallons in 2005" and is expected to "more than one billion gallons by 2010 and double to two billion gallons by 2020."

Wells Fargo rockets to high position in the EPA green power rankings with major committment to green power purchasing in the near term.  ...

... "New to the top 25 list is the No. 2 purchaser, Wells Fargo & Company, making it the largest U.S. corporate purchaser of green power. Over the next three years, Wells Wells FargoFargo will purchase 550 million kWh of clean, renewable energy, an amount that totals nearly 40 percent of Wells Fargo's electricity use. This purchase alone will prevent the emissions of more than 380,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year - the equivalent of carbon dioxide emissions from more than 75,000 cars. " ...
