Seagrass Performs Blue Carbon Role

Research analyzes the role of seagrass in storing carbon and confirm its strength as a carbon sink.  James Fourqurean led a team of researchers in the global study of Coastal Seagrassseagrasses and published the results of its analysis in research paper: Seagrass Ecosystems as Globally Significant Carbon Stocks.  According to UNESCO-IOC, our understanding of carbon sequestration from coastal ecosystems is sufficient to develop effective carbon management strategies for coastal Blue Carbon.  …

…   “Seagrasses help protect our coastlines, they provide habitat for the seafood we eat, and they keep our water clear. … The potential for the world’s seagrasses to be used as carbon offset credits is an initiative referred to as Blue Carbon.”   …

Walmart green supply chain opportunity wiil target carbon intense products

for reduction to achieve Walmart's goal to eliminate twenty million tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its global footprint. The company will deploy a selection, action, and assessment process to enable its sustainability program. Walmart collaborated with external leaders in sustainability and will leverage this integration team to identify projects, measure reductions, engage its supply base, and drive proper procedures into each GHG reduction benefit. ...
... "Selection -- Walmart will focus on the product categories with the highest embedded carbon. This is defined as the amount of life cycle GHG emissions per unit multiplied by the amount the company sells. To find the embedded carbon, the ASC reviewed the GHG emissions associated with all Walmart product categories. This approach ensures the project team focuses on the categories that have the greatest opportunity for reductions. Reductions can come from any part of a product’s life cycle." ...
Via Walmart Stores: http://bit.ly/aBy2pX

Walmart Sustainability commitment aligns with the company's sustainability goals of being supplied 100 percent by renewable energy, creating zero waste and selling products that sustain people. http://bit.ly/dsPMqE

Greening the Walmart integrated supply chain has the potential to reach tens of thousands of companies around the globe. http://bit.ly/cmVTcG The Walmart effect is expected to have significant implications for China according to the Environmental Defense Fund, given the size of the Walmart environmental supply chain. http://bit.ly/cwV1OW

To track benefit realization, Walmart will follow this process: Suppliers and Walmart will jointly account for the reductions. ClearCarbon will perform a quality assurance review of those claims to ensure methodology, completeness and calculations are correct. When the claims meet the quality assurance check, PricewaterhouseCoopers will assess under consulting standards whether the defined procedures were followed consistently to quantify the reduction claim. http://bit.ly/beaYyY

Walmart has received constructive feedback from its colaboraters, such as The Environmental Defense Fund. For example, EDF reviewed the WalMart’s Sustainability Report and made these comments: We’d also like to see Wal-Mart present more data that allows readers to verify the information presented. For example, the limited data presented on improvement to fuel efficiency in the truck fleet – an area where we know that WalMart has made progress – leave room for confusion. http://bit.ly/dfdj3s

Gainesville Florida Solar Projects Lined up til 2016

GRU logo

Gainesville Regional Utilities, Gainesville, Florida's utility pormots solar and offers assistance to businesses and residences that will install solar.

" ... energy-producing solar panels in Gainesville has skyrocketed since the city implemented its new solar incentive program ... waiting list for the program - which is the first solar feed-in tariff in the United States and offers above-market-rate prices for electricity produced by privately owned and installed solar panels - now stretches until 2016."

Between the price GRU offers for the electricity and state rebates for solar panel installation, the feed-in tariff should prove lucrative for those installing solar photovoltaics in the program.

However, the program is limited on a first-come, first-served basis to 4 new megawatts of electricity a year from solar power - more than double the megawatts produced locally a year ago.

The first change proposed Thursday would allow those people waiting in line to install solar panels in 2010 to install the panels now and be paid market rate for the energy the panels produce until the contract they've signed up for kicks in and they are able to receive the higher rate.

"We don't have anything in the program that allows us to pay them for electricity," said Ed Regan, assistant general manager of strategic planning at GRU. "If they're in the queue for 2010, a year for which we know the price, then we would let them build it early."

Another part of that is that GRU is proposing to reinstate the commercial net-metering system that was discontinued when the feed-in tariff was adopted.

Net metering allows people with solar panels to use their own electricity, and if there is any excess energy produced, GRU credits the bill.

The other changes are largely administrative in nature.

"There was a fair amount of gaming or jockeying for position that made us institute additional rules," Regan said of the somewhat unexpected rush that filled up all 4 megawatts of solar panels for the first year in a matter of days.

At least one person has challenged technical terms in the ordinance, arguing the language in the ordinance allows more solar energy to be installed every year, or that the ordinance has fixed prices out to the year 2030.

Regan recommended the commission approve language for the ordinance specifying that only 4 megawatts will be permitted in the program every year and that the ordinance should be changed so that the payout rate after the year 2010 says "to be determined."

"I think Gainesville can be proud to be on the forefront," Hunzinger said. "We have heard some criticism saying 'do not use Gainesville as a model.' To me that's personally, professionally disturbing to hear. However, I do understand there will be criticism. No good deed goes unpunished. The primary reason for implementing the (feed-in tariff) was to encourage solar PV installations in our service area."

Solar Cells that Work All Day Long

Jud Ready, a senior research engineer at the Georgia Tech Research Institute holding 3-D Solar Cell

Here is a new "twist" on the design of solar

cells that allows for a longer "sweet spot" of power generation.

>> The "twist" is that instead of being flat these solar cells are 3-D.

"Solar cells generally crank out the most power at noon, when the sun is at its highest point and can strike the cell at a 90-degree angle. Before and after noon, efficiencies drop off. But researchers [at] Georgia Tech Research Institute ... prototype ... whose surface consists of hundreds of thousands of 100-micrometer-high towers, catches light at many angles and actually works best in the morning and afternoon."Cross section ... cadmium telluride ... around a carbon nanotube tower

"... When the sun is at a 90-degree angle, the prototype delivers only 3.5 percent efficiency. ... and is actually at its peak efficiency--7 percent--when light comes in at a 45-degree angle. That means the device operates at relatively high efficiencies during much of the day and has two efficiency peaks: one before noon, and one after noon."

"While those efficiencies are too low for commercialization, ...  working on optimizing the size and spacing of his towers as well as their chemical composition. As a first application, his sights are set on powering spacecraft and satellites, which could benefit from solar cells that don't require a mechanical means of moving the orientation of the cell to keep it facing the sun."

CO2 Eco Action Tip .... #1

Eco Action Tip

Clean Green!  Sounds great.  But ...

>>> How do I do it?  What is involved?

Here are some ideas:

* use the least toxic cleaner that will do the job or IDEALLY a non toxic one
* use all materials if possible rather than throw away
* check the label to determine how to dispose of unused material
* use towels rather than paper towels (waste issue to be balanced against germs ...)
* if buying paper towels buy those made from post consumer recycled paper
* look to green or non toxic cleaning materials

GM CO2 Emission 40 by 10 Reduction Goal

General Motors has set a goal to reduce CO2 emissions from its North American manufacturing facilities by 40 percent by 2010. This 40 in 10 program is being set in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Climate Leaders program. The Climate Leaders program will develop long-term comprehensive climate change strategies. Partners are encouraged to set GM Assembly Plantaggressive, corporate-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goals, such as GM's 40 by 10. While GM has made progress, it has many opportunities to reduce CO2 emissions. ...
... "GM’s CO2 reductions can be largely attributed to numerous efforts by the company to increase energy efficiency, reduce waste, increase the use of renewable resources such as landfill gas and solar power, and optimize efficiencies across all aspects of the manufacturing process. For example, GM is the largest corporate user of landfill gas in the U.S. This effort results in significant reductions of CO2 emissions. Another example is the gold certification that GM's Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant recently earned from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program for superior energy and environmental design and construction. Among other things, the facility is expected to save over 30 million kwh of electricity over the first ten years of operations. It is initiatives like these that have helped GM to make real strides in reducing CO2 emissions. " ...

Carbon Footprint High For UK Baby-Boomers

Interesting survey results show boomers in UK have highest level of concern for climate change and the highest level of carbon footprint. In some ways, that is good knowledge in that we have a population willing to change, with the potential for high impact. An education and awareness EU Climate Change - Carbon Footprint Studyprogram for that demographic could see benefits. ...
... "A breakdown of the products and services used daily by people over fifty was the basis for the carbon footprint. The data showed that 698 million tonnes of carbon dioxide are associated with consumption in more than 40 kinds of household expenditure categories in Britain. The researchers used age-specific expenditure data to calculate the carbon footprint for on various goods, like food and holidays abroad. A higher carbon footprint is caused by key factors, such as high car dependence and dining out. " ...

Travelers Are Going Green

 Trees
How can you be green and travel - especially by plane?  Air travel is one of the largest contributors to global warming by virtue of all the greenhouse gases emitted.

You want to travel ... you want to be green ... you can only install so many Compact Fluorescent bulbs ...
>>>> What Can You Do?

"Commercial aviation worldwide ranks among the biggest single emitters of greenhouse gases linked to global warming ... So, a few entrepreneurs and environmental groups have devised a simple way to compensate for this damage: Plant a tree."

"Trees serve as what scientists call a "carbon sink," each absorbing more than a ton of carbon dioxide from the air over the course of roughly a century. At least two companies, the Welsh-based Treeflights and the U.S.-based travel booking site Travelocity, now offer a way for travelers to plant trees for every trip they take."  greenhouse gases

"For about $18.70, ... will plant the tree of your choice ... estimates that the typical tree absorbs 1.25 tons of carbon dioxide over the course of its lifetime, which is equivalent to the amount emitted by a commercial airline during a round-trip flight between New York and London."

Printing a Book the Sustainable Way ...

World: A Users Guide for the 21st Century
How does a socially responsible organization, WorldChanging, that is both socially responsible and green - publish a 608 page book?  Think of the energy and waste involved!

One would think this would be an oxymoron - AND one would be wrong!!

"World: A User's Guide to the 21st Century" is broken into 7 sections:

Stuff, Shelter, Cities, Community,  Business, Politics, Planet.

It may well be uniquely "green" book as "Publisher Harry N. Abrams ... bought wind-power credits to offset the energy used to produce the book, made from post-consumer recycled paper".

To counter the environmental impact of their multi-city book tour "the group is investing in greenhouse gas reduction ".

The book of course can be recycled!
