Makani Airborne Wind Power

Makani has an energy solution that harnesses the power of winds at elevations far beyond that available to ground based turbines.  Their “tethered” wind turbine system uses far less material to construct that a typical turbine.  The long term goal would be a system, that can autonomously launch when the wind conditions are right and land when the wind dies down.

“ …. autonomous wing fitted with onboard turbines … Flying at 1,000 ft, … mimics the motion, and speed, of a conventional turbine’s aerodynamically effective blade tips.”

PSE&G (NJ) Generates Heat from Sewage in Camden, NJ

PSE&G is using the thermal energy from a sewage plant in Camden, NJ to help heat the facility.  The system is closed loop – meaning the sewage does not enter the building – but the heat energy is extracted and used to offset the need for electric to heat the facility.

The “ … $1.3 million project … is one of 18 funded by PSE&G toward meeting a state requirement that utilities invest in improving energy efficiency …”

“ … project is believed to be the first of its kind in the United State …”

The waste heat system is expected to save “ … $80,000 a year on electricity bills, about a quarter of its heating costs.”

In addition to the energy / electric savings there is a positive environmental impact.

Wind Energy without Turbines from Cornell University Prof.

Cornell professor Francis Moon (photo) has done some research on generating wind power without turbine blades.

The research looks at “ … vibro-wind power: harvesting energy from the wind as it flows around commercial and residential buildings.  …”

If scalable this would might be a source of power in many large cities bringing the generation source close to the point of use. Large citie4s with multi story buildings may have more power potential with vibro-wind than solar as the roof-print dwarfs the outside surface area.

GE Looks to Cut Cost and Weight of Rooftop Solar Systems

GE recently received federal funding (from US-DOE) to find more cost effective ways to bring solar to homes.

One part of solar PV (photovoltaic) system that they are looking to improve is the inverters that convert DC to AC. Current inverters have drawbacks including “… higher cost, less than ideal efficiency.  Research will focus on integrated inverters that are lower in cost and more efficient to help get the cost closer to retail electric prices.

Another opportunity is to reduce the weight of systems.  Systems today are 2 – 3 lbs / sq-ft with external (to the panels) wiring.   GE is looking to develop systems in then range of 1 lb / sq-ft. with connected wiring.  These could unfold at the installation site and be ready to install – without the need for heavy racking systems.

Novel Idea - Wind Tubines on Highway Signs

 Arizona State University logo

An Arizona State University student has Wind Turbine on Highway Sign Posta novel design to mount HORIZONTAL wind turbines on overhead highway signposts.  By modifying the existing signposts they can be become wind energy sources. See mocked up picture at RIGHT >>>

" ... estimates ... on the highways outside of Phoenix, ... each turbine would produce enough energy annually to power a 700-square-foot apartment. ..."

The idea is that the breeze from the moving cars and the wind can generate "free energy" for the grid - and not require any additional energy use by cars and trucks.  In Arizona many of the highways have a 70 mph speed limit.

Walmart green supply chain opportunity wiil target carbon intense products

for reduction to achieve Walmart's goal to eliminate twenty million tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its global footprint. The company will deploy a selection, action, and assessment process to enable its sustainability program. Walmart collaborated with external leaders in sustainability and will leverage this integration team to identify projects, measure reductions, engage its supply base, and drive proper procedures into each GHG reduction benefit. ...
... "Selection -- Walmart will focus on the product categories with the highest embedded carbon. This is defined as the amount of life cycle GHG emissions per unit multiplied by the amount the company sells. To find the embedded carbon, the ASC reviewed the GHG emissions associated with all Walmart product categories. This approach ensures the project team focuses on the categories that have the greatest opportunity for reductions. Reductions can come from any part of a product’s life cycle." ...
Via Walmart Stores: http://bit.ly/aBy2pX

Walmart Sustainability commitment aligns with the company's sustainability goals of being supplied 100 percent by renewable energy, creating zero waste and selling products that sustain people. http://bit.ly/dsPMqE

Greening the Walmart integrated supply chain has the potential to reach tens of thousands of companies around the globe. http://bit.ly/cmVTcG The Walmart effect is expected to have significant implications for China according to the Environmental Defense Fund, given the size of the Walmart environmental supply chain. http://bit.ly/cwV1OW

To track benefit realization, Walmart will follow this process: Suppliers and Walmart will jointly account for the reductions. ClearCarbon will perform a quality assurance review of those claims to ensure methodology, completeness and calculations are correct. When the claims meet the quality assurance check, PricewaterhouseCoopers will assess under consulting standards whether the defined procedures were followed consistently to quantify the reduction claim. http://bit.ly/beaYyY

Walmart has received constructive feedback from its colaboraters, such as The Environmental Defense Fund. For example, EDF reviewed the WalMart’s Sustainability Report and made these comments: We’d also like to see Wal-Mart present more data that allows readers to verify the information presented. For example, the limited data presented on improvement to fuel efficiency in the truck fleet – an area where we know that WalMart has made progress – leave room for confusion. http://bit.ly/dfdj3s

Mike Duke, Walmart's President and CEO discusses the new Greenhouse Gas Goal: Today we’re announcing an aggressive new goal to eliminate 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from the life cycle of the products we sell around the world by 2015. http://bit.ly/bBXBYx

Solar Decathlon 2009 in Full Swing

Overhead view of Solar Decathlon 2009
Solar Decathlon 2009 is in full swing on the Mall in Washington DC.

With the US Capital on one end and the Washington Memorial on the other it is an amazing site.  Sponsored by the U.S. DOE there are 20 houses showing what is possible with green technologies - using current off the shelf products and some very creative thinking.

Most of the teams are from US colleges  with several international entries ... including Spain and Germany.

Given parameters of 800 sq ft there are some very creative solutions.  Some stress extreme insulation, all have some sort of garden area, all have solar PV and some have solar hot water.  Most interesting is the creative use of 800 sq ft ...

As of this writing RICE is in the lead ... thought the difference between top and bottom on the ranking is not all that great.  Yesterday was very sunny so anyone with LOTS of PV was sure to get extra points ...

Gainesville Florida Solar Projects Lined up til 2016

GRU logo

Gainesville Regional Utilities, Gainesville, Florida's utility pormots solar and offers assistance to businesses and residences that will install solar.

" ... energy-producing solar panels in Gainesville has skyrocketed since the city implemented its new solar incentive program ... waiting list for the program - which is the first solar feed-in tariff in the United States and offers above-market-rate prices for electricity produced by privately owned and installed solar panels - now stretches until 2016."

Between the price GRU offers for the electricity and state rebates for solar panel installation, the feed-in tariff should prove lucrative for those installing solar photovoltaics in the program.

However, the program is limited on a first-come, first-served basis to 4 new megawatts of electricity a year from solar power - more than double the megawatts produced locally a year ago.

The first change proposed Thursday would allow those people waiting in line to install solar panels in 2010 to install the panels now and be paid market rate for the energy the panels produce until the contract they've signed up for kicks in and they are able to receive the higher rate.

"We don't have anything in the program that allows us to pay them for electricity," said Ed Regan, assistant general manager of strategic planning at GRU. "If they're in the queue for 2010, a year for which we know the price, then we would let them build it early."

Another part of that is that GRU is proposing to reinstate the commercial net-metering system that was discontinued when the feed-in tariff was adopted.

Net metering allows people with solar panels to use their own electricity, and if there is any excess energy produced, GRU credits the bill.

The other changes are largely administrative in nature.

"There was a fair amount of gaming or jockeying for position that made us institute additional rules," Regan said of the somewhat unexpected rush that filled up all 4 megawatts of solar panels for the first year in a matter of days.

At least one person has challenged technical terms in the ordinance, arguing the language in the ordinance allows more solar energy to be installed every year, or that the ordinance has fixed prices out to the year 2030.

Regan recommended the commission approve language for the ordinance specifying that only 4 megawatts will be permitted in the program every year and that the ordinance should be changed so that the payout rate after the year 2010 says "to be determined."

"I think Gainesville can be proud to be on the forefront," Hunzinger said. "We have heard some criticism saying 'do not use Gainesville as a model.' To me that's personally, professionally disturbing to hear. However, I do understand there will be criticism. No good deed goes unpunished. The primary reason for implementing the (feed-in tariff) was to encourage solar PV installations in our service area."

Energy Sprawl and Land Intensity

Study looks at the impact of new energy project on land use and nature in the United States. Biofuels have the highest land area impact, while nuclear has the lowest. Over 200,000 square kilometers of new land is likely to be needed to meet US energy demands by 2030. Of couse, energy conservation strategies can reduce these requirements. ...
... "Nuclear power (1.9–2.8 km2/TW hr/yr), coal (2.5–17.0 km2/TW hr/yr) and geothermal (1.0–13.9 km2/TW hr/yr) are the most compact by this metric. Conversely, biofuels (e.g., for corn ethanol 320–375 km2/TW hr/yr) and biomass burning of energy crops for electricity (433–654 km2/TW hr/yr) take the most space per unit power. Most renewable energy production techniques, like wind and solar power, have intermediate values of this metric. " ...

"

"... would encourage greater production of biogas for energy purposes by providing ... a tax credit of $4.27 for every million British thermal units (mmBtu) of biogas produced. Storage Devices for the Electric Grid Smooth Power

Battery PAck - Charleston, WV

One problem with the power grid is that there is no "storage pool"  ... power is there and if not used it is gone -- even if not needed.

Companies are looking at ways to "store" power; ranging from compressed air storage to capacitors to water storage to massive flywheels.  This can be used to store power when demand is low and release it when it is high ... allowing plants to run at a constant rate regardless of lead and then let the power flow back when the load changes ... one great use is for solar or wind systems ... power can be stored and then released when there is no wind or too much cloud cover.

Read on for more ...

" ... battery attached to American Electric Power's grid in Charleston, W.V. ...  a buffer, able to generate a few hours of power for an overloaded substation"

" ... three of them, capable of discharging 6 megawatts, will cost about $27 million. That's part of the reason that American Electric Power's use of storage on the grid is the exception, rather than the rule."

Power storage device" ... two markets when it comes to utility-grade energy storage. ... storage devices that can store several hours or even weeks of electricity. ... are designed to make power generation resources, particularly wind or solar power, available when it's needed"

" ... other ... is ... for "grid stabilization," which is like the short-term, random access memory that a PC uses.

Egg Shells Help Make Hydrogen Fuel

Ohio State University LogoOhio State University engineers have developed a process that can use egg shells to (used of course) into Hydrogen Fuel.

How?  Read on for more ...

" ... patented process uses eggshells to soak up carbon dioxide from a reaction that produces hydrogen fuel. ... also includes a unique method for peeling the collagen-containing membrane from the inside of the shells, so that the collagen can be used commercially."L.S. Fan - OSU Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

" ... L.S. Fan ... and Mahesh Iyer, hit upon the idea when they were trying to improve a method of hydrogen production...[where] ...  fossil fuels such as coal are gasified to produce carbon monoxide gas, which then combines with water to produce carbon dioxide and hydrogen."

"The key to making pure hydrogen is separating out the carbon dioxide,"

"Calcium carbonate –- a key ingredient in the eggshells -- captures 78 percent of carbon dioxide by weight,  ... That makes it the most effective carbon dioxide absorber ever tested."

"Eggshell alone may not be adequate to produce hydrogen for the whole country, but at least we can use eggshell in a better way compared to dumping it as organic waste in landfills, where companies have to pay up to $40 dollars per ton disposal cost," he said.

"And in the long term, we're demonstrating that carbon-based fuel sources, like coal or biomass, can be efficiently converted to hydrogen and liquid fuel. The goal is an energy conversion system that uses a dependable fossil energy source, but at the same time has very little environmental impact."

Solar Cells that Work All Day Long

Jud Ready, a senior research engineer at the Georgia Tech Research Institute holding 3-D Solar Cell

Here is a new "twist" on the design of solar

cells that allows for a longer "sweet spot" of power generation.

>> The "twist" is that instead of being flat these solar cells are 3-D.

"Solar cells generally crank out the most power at noon, when the sun is at its highest point and can strike the cell at a 90-degree angle. Before and after noon, efficiencies drop off. But researchers [at] Georgia Tech Research Institute ... prototype ... whose surface consists of hundreds of thousands of 100-micrometer-high towers, catches light at many angles and actually works best in the morning and afternoon."Cross section ... cadmium telluride ... around a carbon nanotube tower

"... When the sun is at a 90-degree angle, the prototype delivers only 3.5 percent efficiency. ... and is actually at its peak efficiency--7 percent--when light comes in at a 45-degree angle. That means the device operates at relatively high efficiencies during much of the day and has two efficiency peaks: one before noon, and one after noon."

"While those efficiencies are too low for commercialization, ...  working on optimizing the size and spacing of his towers as well as their chemical composition. As a first application, his sights are set on powering spacecraft and satellites, which could benefit from solar cells that don't require a mechanical means of moving the orientation of the cell to keep it facing the sun."

New Idea for Growing Bio Diesel Plants in Utah

Growing BioDiesel in the Median Strip

Everyone is talking about bio fuels.  Some are even trying to make it work.

Here is a novel suggestion / solution being looked at in Utah to use highway right of ways to grow bio fuels ....

"Biofuel Plants to Grow Along I-15"Safflower

(KCPW News) - May 18, 2007 - "Later this summer, look for safflower, flax and canola flowers to pop up along Utah highways. ... Utah ... is experimenting with the oil-producing flowers in a "green effort" that may be the first of its kind in the nation:"

Canola"... if everything works out just right, we could take a mile of our right of way and generate about 500 gallons of biodiesel per year," says UDOT Director John Njord. "Now that's pretty darn significant when you consider we have thousands of miles of right-of-way within our state.""

"... some of the department's trucks have begun running on biodiesel. The entire UDOT fleet burns about $1.5 million gallons of diesel a year. Conservatively, Njord says growing safflower, flax and other biofuel plants along state highways could convert the entire fleet to cleaner-burning biodiesel."... the biggest unanswered question is whether safflower, flax and canola can flourish in the most arid parts of the state. Three test areas are being planted for a one-year pilot. Utah State University will oversee the crops and conversion to biodiesel with a $50,000 grant from UDOT."Flax

San Francisco PUC to Make BioDiesel from Used Cooking Oil

Food to Bio Diesel

San Francisco is one innovative and leading edge city.

Did you know that "... In April, the city banned plastic shopping bags, ... bottled water in some restaurants, and ... Styrofoam takeout containers."?

More interestingly .... "... plans are now under way to turn ... waste vegetable oil produced by the city's 2600 restaurants into biodiesel. The goal: offsetting 20% of the diesel fuel used by city buses."

"Under a $1.3 million dollar program, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) will turn a very large and problematic waste product into a renewable fuel:"

"Fats, oils and grease have been a significant problem for San Francisco’s sewers, ... When not disposed of properly, ... causes odors, attracts rats and leads to backups in The City’s sewer system, ...""Seal of the City of S.F. California

"... any restaurant with a deep fryer produces a steady stream of waste vegetable oil (WVO). ... [which] is generally stored and picked up by chemical companies,  ... In some parts of the country the oil is just thrown away."

"But it's relatively easy to turn WVO into a fuel,  ... SFPUC official Lewis Harrison stated that at least 1 million gallons of biodiesel could be produced ... which is "more than enough" to run the city's entire bus fleet on B20. Since WVO is a waste stream, offsetting petro-diesel usage with WVO biodiesel is particularly advantageous: the use of 1 million gallons of WVO-biodiesel would offset 19,600,000 lbs (9800 tons) of carbon dioxide emissions each year. It also has significant economic and public health benefits: municipal biodiesel production should beat the $4/gallon price of fuel in San Francisco, and B20 biodiesel blends cut diesel soot emissions by 20-40%.

SFPUC officials are hoping to have the city buses running on B20 by the end of 2007.

Generating Electricity from Heat

Thermoacostic Heat Engine - Univ of Utah

"June 4, 2007- University of Utah physicists developed small devices that turn heat into sound and then into electricity. ... holds promise for changing waste heat into electricity, harnessing solar energy and cooling computers..."

"We are converting waste heat to electricity in an efficient, simple way by using sound," says Orest Symko, a University of Utah physics professor who leads the effort. “It is a new source of renewable energy from waste heat."  University of Utah

"The research is funded by the U.S. Army, which is interested in "taking care of waste heat from radar, and also producing a portable source of electrical energy which you can use in the battlefield to run electronics" he says.

"Symko expects the devices could be used within two years as an alternative to photovoltaic cells for converting sunlight into electricity. The heat engines also could be used to cool laptop and other computers that generate more heat as their electronics grow more complex. And Symko foresees using the devices to generate electricity from heat that now is released from nuclear power plant cooling towers.

Fuel from Sugar: DMF Synthesis

Professor James Dumesic at the University of Wisconsin at Madison is leading research into an efficient process for turning sugar, derived from biomass, into 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), which is a transportation fuel that has 40 percent greater energy density than ethanol. ... DMF Synthesis Path
... "The team's method for making HMF and converting it to DMF is a balancing act of chemistry, pressure, temperature and reactor design. Fructose is initially converted to HMF in water using an acid catalyst in the presence of a low-boiling-point solvent. The solvent extracts HMF from water and carries it to a separate location. Although other researchers had previously converted fructose to HMF, Dumesic’s research group made a series of improvements that raised the HMF output and made the HMF easier to extract. For example, the team found that adding salt (NaCl) dramatically improves the extraction of HMF from the reactive water phase and helps suppress the formation of impurities. " ...

Many companies are allowing stockholders to receive all shareholder / proxy materials in electronic form ....

But suppose you feel the need to feel the paper ... Can an annual report be "green"?
>>> GE might be getting close ...

GE Logo

From GE's 2006 Annual Report:  " ... This document was printed on paper that contains from 10% to 100% post-consumer material. The majority of the power utilized was renewable energy, produced with GE’s wind and biogas technologies, and powered by GE steam engines and turbine engines. The paper was supplied by participants of the Sustainable Initiative Programs. GE employed a printer that produces all of its own electricity and is a verified totally enclosed facility that produces virtually no volatile organic compound emissions."

"Visit our interactive online annual report at www.ge.com/annual06 "

So - here's the big question:

Do you chose paper or electronic?  Sort of a twist on the old paper or plastic question they ask at the supermarket!

A New Look at Off Shore Windmills

Deepwater Floating Windmills

A Given:  Wind Power is one solution to our energy needs.

Good:  Off Shore Windmills
Better:  FAR off shore Windmills where the winds are stronger and the windmills are not visible?

A Problem:  NIMBY (who can blame them?)

The Solution:  Part windmill.  Part floating platform.

"Offshore wind turbines are an excellent source of power that could potentially serve hundreds of thousands of consumers ... (using) floating platforms hundreds of miles out to sea, where the winds are even stronger? That is where Paul D. Sclavounos comes in. The MIT professor of mechanical engineering and naval architecture spent decades designing and analyzing large floating structures for deep-sea oil and gas exploration."

" ... Their design calls for a tension leg platform, a system in which long steel cables, or “tethers,” connect the corners of the platform to a concrete-block or other mooring system on the ocean floor. The platform and turbine gain their support from buoyancy."

"... could work in water depths ranging from 30 to 200 meters, Sclavounos said. In the Northeast, they could be 50 to 150 kilometers from shore. And the turbine atop each platform could be big, which is an economic advantage in the wind-farm business. The MIT-NREL design assumes a 5.0 megawatt (MW) experimental turbine now being developed by industry. (Onshore units are 1.5 MW; conventional offshore units are 3.6 MW.)"

"  ... Computer simulations show in hurricane conditions the ... bottom of the turbine blades would remain well above the peak of even the highest wave."

"... Because of the strong offshore winds, the floating turbines should produce up to twice as much electricity per year (per installed megawatt) as wind turbines now in operation. And because the wind turbines do not permanently attach to the ocean floor, they are a movable asset. If a company with 400 wind turbines serving the Boston area needs more power for New York, it can unhook some of the floating turbines and tow them south."

... "I also met with people that are working to help us develop a fuel industry that will Bush Demos Hybrid Automobilebe able to have ethanol derived from produce other than corn. In other words, I'm talking with people on the leading edge of change. And the reason why I've asked them to come in to see me is because I want to make sure that the goal I set by reducing gasoline usage by 20 percent over a 10-year period is a realistic goal. I know it's a necessary goal: it's necessary for national security purposes; it's necessary for economic security purposes; and it's necessary in order to be good stewards of the environment. My question is, is a practical goal, can we achieve that goal. And the answer is, absolutely. Now, it's going to require continued federal research dollars, and I call upon the Congress to fully fund my request for alternative sources of energy. " ...

Beer: Made in an Environmentally Friendly Way!

New Belgium Beer I like beer, so I did not need an excuse to try another brand.

However, I am going to try one of the beers from New Belgium of Fort Collins, Colorado.  I think it will be a Fat Tire Amber Ale ...

What makes New Belgium so unique among brewers?

->>>  How about the fact that they ...

Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions " ... took an employee vote and decided to commit to being the nation’s first 100% wind-powered brewery. ... after our engineers, l... discovered that city’s power  plant, which supplied the brewery with electricity, created the bulk of our emissions. Employee owners voted to dip into their bonus pool to help finance the conversion."Wind Ensamble

Have a Green Building "New Belgium has been a long-time participant in green building techniques. ... From sun tubes and daylighting throughout the facility to reusing heat in the brewhouse, we continue to search out new ways to close loops and conserve resources."

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle • "Our reuse program includes heat for the brewing process, cleaning chemicals, water and much more. Recyling at New Belgium takes on many forms, from turning “waste” products into something new and useful (like spent grain to cattle feed), to supporting the recycling market in creative ways (like turning our keg caps into table surfaces).  We also buy recycled whenever we can, ... Reduction surrounds us – from motion sensors on the lights throughout the building to induction fans that pull in cool winter air to chill our beer – offsetting our energy needs is the cornerstone to being environmentally efficient."

I will let you know if I can find the beer locally (Western Suburbs of Philadelphia) and my humble opinion.

Technology Ups Ethanol MPG Boost

Ethanol Boosting SystemsMassachusetts Institute of Technology scientists have found a novel way to increase MPG with ethanol - and it is not E85!

They found that a "carefully designed and timed direct injection of ethanol through the mechanism of evaporative cooling and its own intrinsic properties as a fuel , is equivalent to increasing the overall fuel octane rating of the mixture of ethanol and gasoline to more than 130."  Typical motor fuels are in the range of 87 (regular) to 91 / 91 (hi-test).  This is achieved by "use of a limited amount of separately stored ethanol."

One result of this is that a "3.0 liter V6 cold be replaced by a 1.5 liter 4 cylinder engine."

EBS is working with Ford Motor to bring this technology to market.

Here's the process.   "VeraSun identified an opportunity to utilize oil extracted from distillers grains, undervalued as a feed component, as an excellent feedstock for biodiesel. Removing the oil from distillers grains both increases the value of the oil for fuel use, and enhances the resulting distillers grains as a livestock feed by concentrating protein and reducing fat content."

"Biodiesel can be blended with petroleum diesel to run in all existing diesel engines."  Production has grown from "75 million gallons in 2005" and is expected to "more than one billion gallons by 2010 and double to two billion gallons by 2020."

Walking to Generate Electricity

Can the United States Walk its Way to Energy Independence?

People WalkingEast Japan Railway has "begun testing rubber floor mats that generate electricity when walked on."  Currently the amount of power is rather miniscule - "a mat produces just 100 milliwatts with each commuters step".  This means that 700,000 commuters you get about 70 kW or "barely enough to light a 100 watt bulk for 10 minutes".

Is this a step in the right direction - energy wise?  Maybe future refinements can produce significantly more power.

Hydrogen-Fueled Vehicles from HydroPower: New York Invests ...

Governor George Pataki discusses New York's plan for one of the largest hydrogen demonstration projects.  This investment of $21 million will use hydropower to produce clean-burning, hydorgen gas to fuel nonpolluting hydrogen vehicles.  The investment will deliver hydrogen generating Governor Pataki has a green agenda that includes biofuels and hydrogen powerstations and the hydrogen-fueled vehicles.  The hydropower-to-hydrogen initiative, planned for Western New York, will spur development of green technology jobs for the region. ...

...   "The hydropower-to-hydrogen project, which is expected to serve a number of hydrogen-fueled work and passenger vehicles and transit buses, corresponds with the New York State Hydrogen Roadmap, a strategic blueprint developed under Governor Pataki's direction for positioning New York State at the forefront of hydrogen research and development efforts nationwide. The document reflects a coordinated effort by the New York Power Authority (NYPA), the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), and the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), and includes hydrogen education and outreach, hydrogen codes and standards review, and research and development in the areas of hydrogen production, storage, distribution and utilization.

NYPA's Trustees authorized up to $21 million for the hydropower-to-hydrogen initiative, with potential sites at Niagara Falls State Park and at Western New York locations operated by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA). Various Niagara Falls State Parkother state and federal government organizations and corporations are also expected to partner in the pioneering project, with hydrogen production anticipated by the end of 2007.  The NYPA board's action followed an engineering feasibility study earlier this year by the Power Authority and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), for determining the size of the electrolysis units for producing hydrogen and the possible vehicle demonstration models for the initiative, with fuel cells and other hydrogen engines.  When fully implemented within three years, the demonstration project, consisting of two hydrogen generation stations, plus storage and fueling facilities, will be producing up to 120 kilograms (kg) per day of the clean-burning fuel. (One kg of hydrogen has the energy equivalent of approximately one gallon of gasoline.)  The hydrogen generation and fueling stations will use up to 700 kw of hydropower. The Power Authority would provide the hydropower from its Niagara Power Project to the NFTA, which is authorized to receive NYPA allocations under state law.  The hydrogen generation stations will cost approximately $7.5 million, including infrastructure upgrades and educational displays. An additional investment of $13.5 million is required for the hydrogen-fueled vehicles. "   ...

Biomass Energy Facility: Local Choice for Green Future ...

School makes smart energy choice by investing in an on-site biomass energy facility to reduce its carbon footprint.  Nan Jenks-Jay, Director of Environmental Affairs, outlines Middlebury College's plan to construct a biomass plant, which will cost up to $11 million.  The facility will generate power from wood chips rather than fuel oil, which is something that the surrounding forests have an abundance of.  Construction is slated to begin in 2007 and start operations in late 2008.  When placed into service, the biomass facility will cut the college’s greenhouse gas emissions by 12,500 metric tons annually.  The school will leverage suppliers of wood chips that use sustainable practices.  ...

...   "Middlebury’s primary objective for the biomass facility is to provide a sustainable, local and renewable fuel source for heating, cooling and electricity for the campus. According to Jenks-Jay, the college’s long-range goal is to obtain wood chips harvested in an environmentally friendly manner from local sources. Our hope is that the college’s entry into biomass will greatly stimulate the growth of the local, sustainable wood chip market and bioenergy economy in Addison County and Vermont, she said. The college estimates that it will require 20,000 to 21,000 tons of chips per year.

The biomass plant will cut the college’s use of number six fuel oil in half, from about two million gallons to one million gallons a year. Increasing the diversity of Middlebury’s energy sources, the facility will leave the college less dependent on the global oil supply and subject to the fluctuating price of oil. Use of the plant will also make it unnecessary to pay for the transportation by ship and truck of one million gallons of oil a year from thousands of miles away to Middlebury. There will be a reduction of carbon emissions produced in the fuel delivery process as well. Most of the money previously spent on the oil and its transport will continue to be spent on energy costs, but now these dollars will remain in Vermont and New England. "  ...

BioButanol Production Options ...

Scott Sklar discusses options for bio-production of butanol as an alternative to ethanol for blends with gasoline.  ...

...   "One company, Environmental Energy Inc. (EEI) has developed and patented technology that they believe overcomes the limitations that have to date kept the cost of butanol production from corn and other forms biomass high.  EEI claims they EEI BioButanol Reactorcan produce 2.5 gallons of butanol from corn with no acetone or ethanol, whereas most other processes have not been able to achieve better than 1.3 to 1.9 gallons of butanol per bushel "   ...

Via Renewable Energy Access: Why Isn't Butanol More Prevalent? ...

Via EEI: A Biomass-to-Butanol/Hydrogen Economy: "This process doubles the yield of butanol from a bushel of corn from 1.3 gallons per bushel to 2.5 gallons per bushel – matching the average ethanol yield that is generally achieved through ethanol fermentation.  Since each process develops 2.5 gallons per bushel the process that converts sugars to butanol yields 24% more energy (Btu’s) per bushel. CO2 Emissions Neutral ...

BP uses its market influence, through targetneutral, to support projects that reduce CO2 emissions to offset the emissions created by automobile exhaust.  A portfolio of emissions reduction and alternative energy projects will be funded and independently monitored.  ...

...   "targetneutral allows a driver to calculate the cost of the annual CO2 reduction targetneutralrequired to make their vehicle CO2 neutral. An average car, driven 10,000 miles in a year, generates approximately four tonnes of CO2. To neutralise this amount of carbon emissions via www.targetneutral.com will cost around GBP20 a year.  Four tonnes is the equivalent of filling a medium sized hot air balloon with pure CO2. A huge amount of CO2 could be neutralised if all 40 million drivers in the UK signed up to targetneutral.  BP has initiated targetneutral, providing all set-up funding and will meet all ongoing running costs.

The money generated by targetneutral goes to a portfolio of CO2 reduction projects including alternative and renewable energy.  Replacing traditional energy production methods with low CO2 emitting alternatives, is one way CO2 reductions are achieved.  Initially there are five projects including a biomass energy plant in Himachal Pradesh; a wind farm in Karnataka, India and an animal waste management and methane capture program in Mexico.  As targetneutral Karnataka India Wind Farmgrows, more projects will be added.  Strict procedures are followed to ensure the projects' integrity. These are modelled on those created by the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) for emissions reduction projects developed under the Kyoto Protocol. All project activity is overseen by the targetneutral Advisory and Assurance Panel. "   ...

Ford Motor Engine Hydrogen Power ...

Ford produces hydrogen fueled V-10 internal combustion engine to power its shuttle bus products for North American fleet customers.  Ford is committed to alternative fuels and supports a flexible fuel strategy.    ...

...   "The supercharged 6.8-liter V-10 engine will power Ford's E-450 hydrogen fueled shuttle buses. The buses are scheduled to be delivered to fleet customers later this year, first in Florida and then in other locations across North America. Hydrogen internal combustion engine technology represents an important step toward enabling hydrogen to become a viable motor fuel.  Ford's 6.8-liter V-10 engine is specially prepared to burn hydrogen as a fuel but is based on the same modular engine series that powers many Ford products.  Hydrogen fueled internal combustion engines have many advantages including high efficiency, all-weather capability, and near zero emissions of regulated pollutants and greenhouse gases (CO 2). They can also be easily hybridized for further gains in fuel efficiency.  While the hydrogen internal combustion engine shuttle buses will provide valuable real-world experience, Ford is also conducting research into next generation hydrogen internal combustion engines, including features such as direct injection to enhance power and fuel economy. Ford Hydrogen Engine ...

Ford's hydrogen internal combustion engine is much more than just a converted production engine. This 6.8-liter V-10 engine is specially prepared to burn hydrogen as a fuel but is based on the same modular engine series that powers many Ford products. Significant efforts were made to optimize this engine for hydrogen fuel to achieve maximum efficiency and robust durability in the customer's hands.  Prior to production, more than 7,000 hours of development and testing was performed on engine dynamometers to ensure optimum durability and performance when vehicles reach customers later this year. The engine development process replicated the same stringent durability standards applied to other Ford engines.

Ford's strategy for alternative fuels is built around multiple technologies, including hydrogen internal combustion engines. This flexible approach allows the company to meet goals for customer needs, environmental impact and shareholder interests. The strategy does not focus on one catch-all solution, but offers a flexible array of options, including hybrids, clean diesels, bio-diesels, advanced engine and transmission technologies and E85 ethanol.  Ford's first hydrogen internal combustion engine demonstration vehicle, released in 2001, was based on a lightweight aluminum sedan body, which also was used in the development of hydrogen fuel cell technology. Subsequent projects included the Model U concept, first showcased at the 2003 North American International Auto Show, several Focus based demonstration vehicles, a V-6 powered tractor in use at Orlando International Airport as well as two hybridized transit buses. At the 2006 North American International Auto Show, Ford displayed the Super Chief Concept, which demonstrated Tri-Flex technology, which allows a vehicle to run on hydrogen, E-85 ethanol or gasoline. Siemens Medical Solutions receives grants from the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority (PEDA).  The grant program is investing in clean energy projects throughout Pennsylvania.  ...

...   "At a time when high oil prices, energy conservation, and alternative energy sources are major issues for American citizens and businesses, these 25 projects will receive financial assistance in the form of grants or loans for a variety of clean electricity projects using sources such as wind, solar, biomass, waste coal and Solar Panel picture ...recycled energy. Siemens received a $415,000 grant to install one of the largest photovoltaic (or solar) energy systems in Pennsylvania – a 100-kilowatt system generating approximately 125,000 kilowatt hours annually. Installation will begin in July 2006.

Kevin Matthews, P.E., the senior facilities manager at Siemens who led the company-wide initiative to obtain the grant, explains that the system will utilize solar panels installed at a 25 degree tilt, which generates 15 percent more electricity annually than flat solar panels. "   ...

Via Siemens: Siemens Receives Pennsylvania Grant for Clean Energy Project ...

Siemens develops a wide range of technologies to help customers address their sustainability needs and sets high standards of environmental care for its own businesses. With one of the world’s broadest energy portfolios, Siemens has built upon its strong power generation base to include solutions in waste-to-energy, wind and hydro power, emission/pollution control, green buildings, ethanol plant controls and hybrid vehicles. In several of its non-energy businesses – medical, water, lighting, transportation, and industrial automation – the company is providing solutions that sustain natural resources and contribute to overall quality of life. In its own operations, Siemens enforces practices to consume less, conserve more and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Siemens has been on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for five years in a row.

Via Madison Gas and Electric: "Panels at a 25-degree tilt angle produce about 5% more electricity than panels tilted at 45 degrees. "

Via Evergreen Solar: Evergreen Solar Producing Power for Retail Giant: "The 80,000 square-foot 100-kilowatt system, consisting of 912 photovoltaic (PV) panels covering nearly the entire roof of the building, has been running smoothly since starting operations last spring. Operating year-round, it should produce over 100,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to power 13 average homes. The installation is also expected to offset the release of more than 100,000 pounds of carbon dioxide - a leading cause of global warming - and other harmful greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere each year. A permanent in-store display allows shoppers to view information about the solar power system. "

Via State of Pennsylvania: The Pennsylvania Energy Development Plan (Draft): "Pennsylvania Energy Policy Financial tools such as PEDA are important to the development of the clean, advanced energy sector. Ultimately, however, sustainable growth can only be achieved if the overall policy environment in Pennsylvania is favorable to the development of clean, advanced energy. Pennsylvania has already taken several important actions to create such a policy environment. In 2004, Pennsylvania enacted the Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards Act (AEPS), which requires that, within 15 years, 18% of Pennsylvania’s retail electricity must be generated from alternative energy resources.
