Novel Idea - Wind Tubines on Highway Signs

 Arizona State University logo

An Arizona State University student has Wind Turbine on Highway Sign Posta novel design to mount HORIZONTAL wind turbines on overhead highway signposts.  By modifying the existing signposts they can be become wind energy sources. See mocked up picture at RIGHT >>>

" ... estimates ... on the highways outside of Phoenix, ... each turbine would produce enough energy annually to power a 700-square-foot apartment. ..."

The idea is that the breeze from the moving cars and the wind can generate "free energy" for the grid - and not require any additional energy use by cars and trucks.  In Arizona many of the highways have a 70 mph speed limit.

Streetline Networks Technology Can Reduce Carbon Emissions in Cities

Streetline Networks

Streetline uses software and sensors to adjust parking meter pricing to reduce cars circling for parking spaces.  It is estimated that up to 30 % of carbon emissions are caused once a car is in the city - circling for a cheap parking space at a parking meter.  When meter prices are close to the rate of a parking lot the incentive to keep driving looking for a cheap meter spot goes way down ... as does wasted fuel and emissions and Co2.

Viridity Energy and SEPTA to "Recycle" Subway Braking Energy

Viridity logo

SEPTA and Viridity Energy are working to reclaim and then reuse or resell the electricity generated by SEPTA subway and trolley cars.

Much the same as a hybrid auto using regenerative braking to charge a battery - this system  sends the energy generated from braking subway cars back to the Subway power system for short term storage.  This turns the normally wasted energy into a resource.

Viridity Energy 's solution will " ... allow SEPTA to recycle the energy created from the regenerative braking ability of trains and trolleys ... ".  The braking energy will be stored in a large battery.

Benefits will include energy savings by storing the energy that can then be used to reduce SEPTA's draw from the GRID or even returned to the GRID for revenue during peaks use times.  It is projected that energy savings will result in over 1,200 tons of carbon emissions avoided per year and helping " ... balance electric generation and electric load on the PJM interconnection ..."

Fast and Easy Ways to Be Green

SEarth911 newsometimes being green really is plain and simply easy -- low or now cost and with little downside.  There are lots of little things that taken together, over time can really add up.

Check out these and other great idea from Earth911.com ...

Here are 3 ...

(1) Skip the drive through and park ... " ... every minute the average car engine idles, it emits 6 to 7 grams of pollutants into the atmosphere. ... "  Taken collectively for say a millions cars over the period of a year and you reduce / eliminate over 700 tons of emissions.  You also save a lot of gas and money ... and get some exercise !

(2) Pay your bills on-line ... " .. reduce your household’s paper consumption ... eliminate paper waste ..."

(3) Turn stuff off ... not just lights that are on when no one is in the room but electronics.  Many devices are actually sucking power in standby mode and not actually "off".  " ... Even a cell phone charger continues to use energy when plugged in, whether your cell phone is charging or not. ... "  This often called phantom power users because many electronic devices are drawing power in standby mode and collectively that adds up.  Save money, reduce the demand for power and keep the air cleaner.  For your computer consider plugging all the electronics into a single power strip and with one switch you can turn off a PC, printer, monitor and  other devices.

Greening the Hotel Room

Do you hate to waste energy at home?  How about when you travel?  Some travelers are a little less energy efficient on the road then at home.  Some hotels are helping to change that ...

I remember when I was in Singapore in 1990 and the hotel had a neat way to save energy.  If you wanted the lights and A/C to work in the room you had to put the key chain (actually a block of plastic with metal at  the bottom) in a slot by the door.  This completed a circuit that "turned the power on" in the room.  And when you left ... you took the key and off went the power.

" ... trying to develop industrial blood--a synthetic version of the enzyme that blood uses to capture CO2 ... best known chemistry for CO2 management ... "

"Current carbon capture approaches use chemicals ... system has to be huge and the process requires a pile of heat, which means a pile of energy and therefore a pile of cash. The cost of electricity from a coal-fired plant is projected to rise 80% in order to pay for a 90% reduction in CO2."

" ... envisions a simpler, cheaper system involving membranes that sift carbon dioxide out of the flue gas ...  hopes to do is dope the membrane with a substance based on the enzyme that blood uses to capture CO2, called carbonic anhydrase."c--are also working to develop carbon capture devices based on carbonic anhydrase.

NYC Carbon Counter - Real Time Carbon Counts

NYC Carbon Counter

You cannot manage what you cannot measure ... everyone is hearing about the increasing carbon / greenhouse emissions .. but just how big a number is it?  How fast is it growing?

To get a real time view take a look at the 10 character - 70 foot "meter" in New York's Times Sq on the Deutsch Banks billboard.

" ...displays the amount of equivalent greenhouse gas emissions in terms of carbon in the atmosphere, and is constantly updated based on measurements from NASA, NOAA, and supporting research from MIT. ... the number is a reflection of all greenhouse gas emissions (methane, nitrous oxide, etc.) by their impact equivalencies in carbon. It even accounts for dips and rises in the amount of carbon in the atmosphere due to seasonal changes so not to appear to be slowing down certain times of the year.

"Before ... the information was only updated every five years. ... displaying the count in real time "allows people to begin to engage in the debate around the issue." ... the counter creates a sense of urgency, a call to action, and is intended to spur action to take the steps necessary in saving our planet."

Pennsylvania's "Mercury Free Thermostat Law"

mercury thermostat bulb

For years thermostats have been made with a small vial of mercury (center top in picture) that was used to make electrical contact based on temperature.

Newer digital thermostats does not contain mercury so as consumers replace the old with the new -- there is the possibility of contamination from disposal of the old style thermostats.  Mercury can contaminate the air and the water and is a neurotoxin ... it is nasty stuff!

" ... Pennsylvania's new Mercury-Free Thermostat Law ... will allow people to safely dispose of out-of-service thermostats containing mercury."

" ... Law, effective December 8, 2009, bans the sale, installation and disposal of mercury thermostats. ... requires that thermostat manufacturers establish and maintain a collection and recycling program for out-of-service mercury thermostats; ... Wholesalers who sell thermostats must participate as a collection site for mercury thermostats."

Sanyo Waterless Clothes Washer

Sanyo Waterless CLothes Washer

We've seen washing machines that tell you whose turn it is, offer remote monitoring, sterilize garb, require no water, and tackle more stains than we knew were possible to pick up, but Sanyo's forthcoming machine lives life on the greener side, and cuts down your trips to the dry cleaners to boot. The aptly-named AQUA was spotted as CES, and aside from the thoughtfully designed entry door that's high enough for folks to reach while standing up, this gizmo rocks a unique "Aqualoop" feature that allows it to recycle water for use in future washes. Moreover, the Air Wash function enables owners to clean clothes at home that are typically reserved for the dry cleaners, as it "infuses" your swag with odor / bacteria-killing chemicals without the use of water, leaving your wearables fresh and your body at home. Although there's no word on price or future availability just yet, we've still got more than a few reservations when it comes to reusing soiled liquid to, um, clean dirty clothing.

Egg Shells Help Make Hydrogen Fuel

Ohio State University LogoOhio State University engineers have developed a process that can use egg shells to (used of course) into Hydrogen Fuel.

How?  Read on for more ...

" ... patented process uses eggshells to soak up carbon dioxide from a reaction that produces hydrogen fuel. ... also includes a unique method for peeling the collagen-containing membrane from the inside of the shells, so that the collagen can be used commercially."L.S. Fan - OSU Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

" ... L.S. Fan ... and Mahesh Iyer, hit upon the idea when they were trying to improve a method of hydrogen production...[where] ...  fossil fuels such as coal are gasified to produce carbon monoxide gas, which then combines with water to produce carbon dioxide and hydrogen."

"The key to making pure hydrogen is separating out the carbon dioxide,"

"Calcium carbonate –- a key ingredient in the eggshells -- captures 78 percent of carbon dioxide by weight,  ... That makes it the most effective carbon dioxide absorber ever tested."

"Eggshell alone may not be adequate to produce hydrogen for the whole country, but at least we can use eggshell in a better way compared to dumping it as organic waste in landfills, where companies have to pay up to $40 dollars per ton disposal cost," he said.

"And in the long term, we're demonstrating that carbon-based fuel sources, like coal or biomass, can be efficiently converted to hydrogen and liquid fuel. The goal is an energy conversion system that uses a dependable fossil energy source, but at the same time has very little environmental impact."

Electric Lawn Mowers

Logo

Gasoline engines from lawn equipment (movers, blowers, edgers, etc) contribute a significant share of pollution.  Small engines are not subject to the same emission requirements as larger engines and so are probably the biggest non-road emissions source.

For smaller lawns a battery powered electric mower might be a practical solution.nueron electric mover

Philips ALTO Bulbs

Philips ALTO LampsEnergy Saving Bulbs - PhilipsSeveral complaints about compact fluorescent bulbs is that:

- they contain mercury
- they do not fit in the same space as an incandescent bulb

Philips has solved these problems with their ALTO bulbs.

Read on for more >>>

" ... Philips Energy Savers ... don't just provide the light of your standard light bulb, they also have the same classic shape. ..."

These bulbs are better for the environment because they use less wattage for similar light, can last years longer than incandescent bulbs as there is no filament to burn out and have less mercury than other CFB.

Mercury is a highly toxic material that can pollute air and water and improper disposal of CFB can lead to pollution (though probably off set by the pollution of less fossil fuels ... ?)

Evergreen's "Green Cargo Ship"

Eergreen's Green Ship DetailsThe Taiwanese company "Evergreen" is building Green Cargo Ships.  One major source of pollution takes place when cargo ships are docked at port - either loading or unloading.  Read on how Evergreen solves this and other typical pollution sources from ocean going cargo ships.

>>>For details read on ...

Among the Green features ...

 • "A double-skinned hull aimed at preventing accidents and oil spills. Oil tanks also are situated to minimize fuel spillage if there is an accident."

 • "The ability to plug into “shore power” at ports, allowing the ship to turn off its generators while tied to a terminal. The Port of Los Angeles is the only port to require that ships shut down their diesel generators while in port. ...ships’ engines and generators also have the capability to use low-sulfur fuels while in port."

 • "Large holding tanks that allow the ships to keep wastewater onboard until it can be properly disposed of at shore. Oily water separators help reduce the oil content in the wastewater."

 • "Tin-free, anti-corrosive coating on the underwater hull. Older coatings contained tin, which can be harmful to marine life."

" ... ... technologies added $2 million to the cost of each ship ... said the green ships are worth the money."

“... our market is price-driven and highly competitive … we know most” of our customers “are also very aware of the environmental issues,” said Evergreen’s founder and Chairman Dr. Y.F. Chang. “We can assure them that Evergreen will provide first-class service (while) maintaining the highest environmental standards.”

Summer is almost over and there are still a few good BBQ days left.  Wondering how to make your BBQ GREEN?

>>> Read on for some tips ...and interesting information ...

"... you may be concerned that your backyard barbecue is adding to global warming ... Jay Gulledge, senior research fellow at the Pew Center on Global Climate Change, counsels that "the carbon footprint of backyard grilling is not that significant compared to what people do in their everyday lives. Lights, TVs, cars, these are much more significant than grilling."

" ... notes that backyard grilling with either gas or charcoal is likely to be a better environmental option than "using an electric stove in your house"  ... powered by a coal-burning power plant."

Here are some easy ways to Green-Up your BBQ ...

"... opt for compostable dishes and utensils made from renewable resources ... These items are sold in stores including Whole Foods, Wal-Mart and Target."

"Plan a menu based on sustainable food choices. ... local or organic foods where possible, ... Buying local minimizes the use of fossil fuels ... and supports the regional economy."

"Use DEET-free repellents to avoid mosquitoes, black flies and other bugs ... are numerous natural repellents available, many made with strong-smelling natural oils such as citronella or geranium."

In addition to numerous web sites and countless articles there is now personal coaching available.  Read on to learn more about the Carbon Coach ...

In the face of conflicting information about what the most significant sources of carbon dioxide are, we dither. When we aren’t sure what to tackle first, we delay. When we are short of time and personal energy, we only tackle things that we are confident will make a dent in our carbon footprint. That’s where I come in.

"I can help coach you toward a continual reduction of your carbon usage. ... shrunk my own carbon footprint significantly ... and I can steer you towards those actions that are the most effective, most practical and most rewarding in your situation."

" ...  as ... with sports or life coaches, having a friendly source of enlightenment and encouragement can help you to turn more of your intentions into actions."

" ... As a result of working with me, people tend to find joy in 'travelling light' and often regret not taking action earlier. People also find that the financial savings they make quickly cover the cost of my involvement, generating a very welcome financial and environmental win-win."

Green Paper and Cleaning Products

SEventh Generation Logo

There are many companies that offer Green Products.  Many provide a wide range of products.  All have neat web sites.

Seventh Generation's web site has lots of great Green Factoids and links to living the Green life.

We can all make a difference - one at a time.  "Each individual can make a difference .... The choices we make everyday regarding the food we eat, how much water and energy we consume, the types of cleaning products we use, the kind of car (and how often) we drive, all can have a positive or negative impact on the earth."

What about the name?  What is the meaning or message?
"... derives its name from the Great Law of the Iroquois that states, In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations."

"... provide interesting and relevant information through our product packaging and other initiatives including printed materials. .. "The Seventh Generation Guide to a Non-Toxic Home," a comprehensive guide designed to help consumers and retail buyers make better health and environmental choices ... perhaps the most important lesson ... is that "as goes the earth's health, so goes ours."

Interesting Factoid:

"If every household in the U.S. replaced just one 4 pack of 400 sheet virgin fiber bathroom tissue with 100% recycled ones, we could save: 1,450,000 trees, 3.7 million cubic feet of landfill space, equal to 5,500 full garbage trucks, 523 million gallons of water, a year’s supply for 4,100 families of four, and avoid 89,000 pounds of pollution!"

European Union's Green PMs Consider Carbon Impact of Two Location

The European Union (EU) alternates meetings between its two locations in Brussels and Strasburg, France.  The regular "commute" between these sites is not a plus for the environment some in the EU say.

Read on for more.
EU Flags

"EU institutions need to put their own house in order before it can be seriously considered as the global leader in the battle against climate change, argues Green MEP Caroline Lucas. .... a start would be the end of the monthly "merry-go-round" between Brussels and Strasbourg."

"... the European Parliament itself is a prodigious emitter of carbon. Take, for example, its anachronistic "two seat" arrangement that sees its meetings alternate between Brussels and Strasbourg, 220 miles away."

"...monthly [trip] consists of some 2,000 parliamentary staff and interpreters, nearly 1,000 assistants, journalists and lobbyists, 785 MEPs and 15 lorry-loads of trunks and documents ...responsible for emitting at least 20,000 tonnes of CO2 every year - about the same as the entire CO2 output of a small nation like Kiribati, or 4,000 London households."

"The EU could become a world leader in tackling climate change and sustainable living, promoting renewable energy generation and living more lightly on the planet - indeed, it's essential that it does so.

"Green MEPs know this and are committed to trying to lead the other EU institutions and member governments towards the same conclusion. If we are to succeed though, we will have to put our own house(s) in order first."

New Idea for Growing Bio Diesel Plants in Utah

Growing BioDiesel in the Median Strip

Everyone is talking about bio fuels.  Some are even trying to make it work.

Here is a novel suggestion / solution being looked at in Utah to use highway right of ways to grow bio fuels ....

"Biofuel Plants to Grow Along I-15"Safflower

(KCPW News) - May 18, 2007 - "Later this summer, look for safflower, flax and canola flowers to pop up along Utah highways. ... Utah ... is experimenting with the oil-producing flowers in a "green effort" that may be the first of its kind in the nation:"

Canola"... if everything works out just right, we could take a mile of our right of way and generate about 500 gallons of biodiesel per year," says UDOT Director John Njord. "Now that's pretty darn significant when you consider we have thousands of miles of right-of-way within our state.""

"... some of the department's trucks have begun running on biodiesel. The entire UDOT fleet burns about $1.5 million gallons of diesel a year. Conservatively, Njord says growing safflower, flax and other biofuel plants along state highways could convert the entire fleet to cleaner-burning biodiesel."... the biggest unanswered question is whether safflower, flax and canola can flourish in the most arid parts of the state. Three test areas are being planted for a one-year pilot. Utah State University will oversee the crops and conversion to biodiesel with a $50,000 grant from UDOT."Flax

Can An Annual Report (Print Version) Be "Green"?

piles of paper

It's that time of year when stockholders are getting deluged with annual reports and related materials.  That means lots of paper.

Many companies are allowing stockholders to receive all shareholder / proxy materials in electronic form ....

But suppose you feel the need to feel the paper ... Can an annual report be "green"?
>>> GE might be getting close ...

GE Logo

From GE's 2006 Annual Report:  " ... This document was printed on paper that contains from 10% to 100% post-consumer material. The majority of the power utilized was renewable energy, produced with GE’s wind and biogas technologies, and powered by GE steam engines and turbine engines. The paper was supplied by participants of the Sustainable Initiative Programs. GE employed a printer that produces all of its own electricity and is a verified totally enclosed facility that produces virtually no volatile organic compound emissions."

"Visit our interactive online annual report at www.ge.com/annual06 "

So - here's the big question:

Do you chose paper or electronic?  Sort of a twist on the old paper or plastic question they ask at the supermarket!

The Real Cost of E-Waste

e-waste ... JKLossner

E-Waste is a fact of life.  What can be done about it is up for discussion.

Like most items; the full cost, including the cost to the environment for its manufacture and disposal, is not the same as the purchase cost.

"Just consider PCs.  Gartner estimates that in the next three years, 400 million will be replaced worldwide.  That's a lot of plastic, glass, metals and chemicals to dispose of, with all their attendant environmental effects.

 Cartoon fron www.jklosssner,com

One approach is to factor disposal costs into the Total cost of Ownership (TCO).  This is not a likely scenario given the tight IT budgets most organizations face.

I guess the best we can do for now is reduce, reuse, and recycle by donating usable equipment to charities or giving it to employees or hiring asset disposal firms to properly dispose of it.

For now there are now easy answers ....
>>> Maybe a tax like that once imposed on recyclable bottles?  It's an interesting idea.

Travelers Are Going Green

 Trees
How can you be green and travel - especially by plane?  Air travel is one of the largest contributors to global warming by virtue of all the greenhouse gases emitted.

You want to travel ... you want to be green ... you can only install so many Compact Fluorescent bulbs ...
>>>> What Can You Do?

"Commercial aviation worldwide ranks among the biggest single emitters of greenhouse gases linked to global warming ... So, a few entrepreneurs and environmental groups have devised a simple way to compensate for this damage: Plant a tree."

"Trees serve as what scientists call a "carbon sink," each absorbing more than a ton of carbon dioxide from the air over the course of roughly a century. At least two companies, the Welsh-based Treeflights and the U.S.-based travel booking site Travelocity, now offer a way for travelers to plant trees for every trip they take."  greenhouse gases

"For about $18.70, ... will plant the tree of your choice ... estimates that the typical tree absorbs 1.25 tons of carbon dioxide over the course of its lifetime, which is equivalent to the amount emitted by a commercial airline during a round-trip flight between New York and London."

Honda Offers Home Fueling for Natural Gas Civic

Honda Phill - for home fuelingSo, you want a Natural Gas powered car, and you found one.  Honda sells the Civic GX at select dealers in NY and California. Honda Civic GX - Natural Gas Version

Now about the lack of fueling stations for the average consumer ... There are approximately 16 in the NYC metro area and 200 in California.  Not enough for comfort?  Hmmm.  What to do?

Honda's sells the Phill - a home fueling system that turns a home natural gas into the required "gas" for the Civic GX.  The Phill can be mounted in a garage and pressurizes the low pressure natural gas found at home to the require 3500 - 3600 psi needed for fueling.  Though slower than a "gas station" it allows flexibility for those far from a Natural Gas station.

The Phill is safe and Honda Philleasy to use .... see pictures in this post above and below.

Why Recycle? Here's Some Good Reasons ...

waste make up

We all hear that we should recycle.  It reduces the amount of trash sent to landfills and that means lower garbage costs.  It means less garbage to possibly pollute and land and air.  So it seems obvious to recycle.

Did you know that recycling ... : Recycling Fun

  1. "It’s EASY. ...use a rag to wipe spills rather than a disposable towel or a cloth bag that can be constantly reused to shop for groceries."
  2. "Saves money. You can also make money by turning in your bottles and cans."
  3. "Creates jobs. Recycling is big business in California. ... accounting for approximately $85,000 jobs and producing $10 billion in products and services per year."
  4. "Saves energy. ... Recycling also frequently saves energy because it can take less energy to clean or convert materials. For example, less energy is required to produce a gallon of re-refined oil than creating new oil."
  5. "Saves natural resources. Reducing, reusing, and recycling materials help prevents the need to cut down new materials such as trees or digging into new mines. Also, it saves natural resources by not creating new landfills to hold new waste. Reducing, reusing, and recycling materials eliminates the need to build the equivalent of one new large landfill each year in California."

Green Roof for a Very Green Data Center

commitment to the environment

AISO.Net is not just a "GREEN" web hosting and data center company in the traditional sense.  In addition to generating 100% of their energy needs from their own solar panels they are building a "GREEN ROOF" for their data center.

The "GREEN ROOF" "is a layer of dirt 3 to 4 inches thick with drought resistant plants.  The new green roof will reduce our cooling and heating requirements by over 50%.  When finished, AISO will be the first and only public data center in North American with a green roof.  Along with our green roof we will be replacing all of our Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs with LED lighting.  This will reduce electricity usage and they contain no mercury.  Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs contain mercury which becomes a concern at landfills and trash incinerators where the mercury from many bulbs can escape and contribute to air and water pollution.  We are also in the process of LEED certifying our data center and office with the U.S. Green Building Council."

AISO.Net is a solar powered Web Hosting facility.  Some of the benefits of being green are identified on their web site include:

"According to BP Solar...

Our 120 solar panel system will eliminate the production of
- 19,890 lbs of Carbon Dioxide (CO2/GHG) per year
- 5.9 lbs of Nitrous Oxide (NOX/smog) per year
- 0.45 lbs of Sulfur Dioxide (SO4/acid rain) per year
This is the equivalent of planting 3.5 acres of trees per year
"

"AISO's data center and main office is powered by 120 solar panels which generate our electricity. AISO receives calls from customers asking if AISO really runs entirely on solar power. We have proof, a real-time Web camera trained on our solar panels that flank our 2,000-square-foot data center. "Anybody can buy ecocredits," says Phil Nail, Director of Technology for AISO, referring to companies that buy alternative energy credits in exchange for the amount of electricity they consume. Dell Computers: Plant a Tree , Help the Environment

Plant a Tree

Jan 9, 2006:  At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, Michael S. Dell announced that Dell has a new goal - planting trees.

Dell "announced a global carbon-neutral initiative that plants trees for customers to offset the carbon impact of electricity required to power their systems. The first of its kind program, announced at the Consumer Electronics Show here, underscores Dell’s commitment to continued broad environmental stewardship."

"Dell will be the first global technology company to offer customers the opportunity to offset the emissions associated with the electricity used to power their computers through its ‘Plant a Tree for Me’ program. Dell is partnering with The Conservation Fund and the Carbonfund.org, non-profit organizations that will use the funds to plant trees in sustainably managed forests, absorbing carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere from generated electricity. The company said that 100 percent of the donations received by the "Plant a Tree for Me" program will be used by partners to facilitate planting trees.

A customer donation of $2 for a notebook and $6 for a desktop will go toward the planting of trees which will absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, offsetting the equivalent emissions resulting from the production of electricity used during the average three-year use of a computer."

Dell also offers free recycling of old computers to customers.  "Dell currently offers consumers no-charge recycling of any brand of used computer or printer with the purchase of a new Dell computer or printer. This service includes home pick-up of the used computer at no charge.

Under its new policy, Dell will provide consumers no-charge recycling of any Dell-branded product, regardless of whether a replacement product is purchased."  Link

...   "California can achieve these emission reductions through pollution-cutting investments and programmatic initiatives in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable Speaker Fabian Nunezenergy, cleaner cars, alternative fuels, improved transportation systems, and water conservation. These investments and initiatives will also provide economic and environmental benefits. For example, reducing the air pollution from mobile and stationary sources as well as catalyzing the technological ingenuity of California entrepreneurs, researchers, and businesses.

AB 32 is symbolic of California's history of leadership on environmental issues.  AB 32 establishes a limit on greenhouse emissions – reducing emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2020. The bill also requires the California Air Resources Board to institute a mandatory emissions reporting and tracking system to monitor and enforce compliance with the emissions limit. "   ...

Via SPEAKER FABIAN NUNEZ: Speaker Nunez and Assemblymember Pavley Introduce Groundbreaking Bill to Curb Global Warming, Spur Technology Investments: "In addition to setting a binding limit on greenhouse gas emissions, AB 32 requires the California Air Resources Board to institute a mandatory emissions reporting and tracking system to monitor compliance with the emissions limit. The limit would ensure that global warming pollution would be reduced by 145 million tons by 2020 or to 25% below forecasted emissions (reduced to 1990 levels by 2020). The limit is consistent with the goal set by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in Executive Order EO S-3-05 last summer. "   GHG Sample Historical Data ...

Speaker Urges Passage of Historic Legislation to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Weekly Radio Address: "Whenever we act to protect the environment, some always question whether it will hurt the economy, or hurt us in the pocketbook.   It’s a legitimate question that can be answered by looking at California's past efforts to fight pollution.  A 2005 study by experts at Stanford University found each Californian typically saved about $1,000 per year between 1975 and 1995 just through energy efficiency standards for buildings and appliances. And energy efficiency has helped the California economy grow an extra 3 percent – a $31 billion gain – compared to business as usual during the same 20-year period.  The study also forecasts the job growth created by technological innovations in the energy-efficiency industry will generate an $8 billion payroll over the next twelve years. Via ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON NATURAL RESOURCES: California Greenhouse Gas GHG Emissions: "The term GHG emissions refers to gases, such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, hydroflurocarbons, and perflurocarbons that when allowed to build up in the atmosphere causes a rise in the average temperature of the earth's surface.  In California, nearly 40% of our GHG pollution comes from our 24 million motor vehicles and over 30% comes from the growing number of power plants that burn natural gas. Air pollution: Quality Improving But Not Complete ...

Air quality is improving in the United States, but the improvement effort is not complete.  The data shows a strong correlation between a decrease in the pollution level and a increase in the health of citizens.  However, millions of Americans live in are where they continue to experience unhealthful levels of air pollution.  We must continue our efforts.  Pollution from marine and locomotive sources contribute significantly to the air pollution problem and are next on the improvement agenda.  The following anecdotes provide more details on the American Lung Association's study that tracks the air quality improvement.  ...

...   "The State of the Air: 2006 report finds that more than 150 million Americans still live in counties where they are exposed to unhealthful levels of air pollution. The report ranks the cities and counties with the dirtiest air, and provides county-by-county report cards on the two most pervasive air pollutants: particle pollution (more commonly called soot) and ozone (more commonly called smog). While air pollution is unsafe for everyone, some people are at increased risk because of their age or health situation. Those groups include people with asthma, adults over 65, children under 18, people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD – chronic bronchitis and emphysema), people with cardiovascular disease, and those with diabetes.

The State of the Air: 2006 report also takes a closer look at pollution from marine and locomotive sources which contribute significantly to the air pollution problem. State and local air pollution officials estimate that pollution from these sources is responsible for 4,000 premature deaths a year. The U.S. EPA has promised to issue guidelines for limiting air pollution from marine and locomotive sources but has not yet acted. The marine sources include vessels ranging from tug boats and ferries to recreational boats. Emissions from boats foul the air in port cities like Houston, Los Angeles, and New York. Diesel-powered locomotives continue to pollute the air in cities like Chicago and Pittsburgh.   Air quality

The study, conducted by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, monitored and analyzed air pollution and health data in six metropolitan areas: Watertown, MA; Kingston and Harriman, TN; St. Louis, MO; Steubenville, OH; Portage, Wyocena and Pardeeville, WI; and Topeka, KS. The researchers found that for each 1 microgram decrease in soot per cubic meter of air, death rates from cardiovascular disease, respiratory illness and lung cancer decrease by 3 percent – extending the lives of 75,000 people a year in the United States. The study was published in the March 15 issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. "   ...
