Radnor (Delaware County, PA) Schools Go Green




Radnor Middle School Radnor Township (Delaware Country, Pa) recently opened their new Middle School.  It was designed from the ground up to be environmentally friendly as well as to provide a healthy environment for the students and staff.

Some of the energy saving features include: " ... Geothermal heating and cooling, ...'green roof' with plants that absorb storm-water, keep the building cool, and give off oxygen, Waterless urinals and motion-activated sinks, Motion sensors that adjust / turn off classroom lights reducing electrical load..."

" ... is the only green-roof school in Delaware County [PA]  ... . is eligible to receive LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council ..."

" ... plants on the roof and canopy tops produce oxygen, reduce storm-water runoff, and keep the building's temperature down. ... geothermal heating and cooling through 144 wells 500 feet below surface level, ... recycled materials in structural steel, concrete masonry units, concrete footings of the building, ... the terrazzo floor in the lobby contains recycled glass aggregate, instead of marble chips. ... In each classroom, the carbon dioxide level is monitored, and more fresh air is piped in if it gets too high."

" ... crushed brick and concrete from the existing middle school was used as fill to contribute to the storm-water management system.  ... Before demolition of the existing middle school, an auction was held to sell off usable equipment and elements of the building. ... Approximately 85% of all construction waste for both construction and demolition was diverted from landfills and recycled.
