Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ "COST") takes energy management and conservation seriously.  They elaborate on the role it plays in benefiting the members and shareholders as well as the communities where they do business.

 Among the techniques for reducing energy demand:

  • using significant skylights
  • control lighting based on the time of day
  • evaluating lighting technologies for greater lighting at lower purchase and operating cost
  • design and build to California law or exceed if required by local code
  • use high efficiency HVAC (heating and air conditioning)
  • venturing into photovoltaics (solar panels to generate electricity)
  • evaluating hybrid delivery trucks
  • subsidies to employees who carpool
  • subsidies to employees who use monthly bus passes
