President’s initiative to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Bransby is an AU professor, researcher and nationally-recognized expert in developing switchgrass as an alternative fuel source. He was among five Alabama leaders who met in Hoover with President Bush, who promoted the potential of switchgrass in his State of the Union address in January. AU President Ed Richardson earlier this year committed $3 million to a new AU alternative energy initiative, capitalizing on the university’s research expertise in forestry, engineering and agriculture and positioning AU as a national leader in converting natural resources into fuels.
